-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
To respect and treasure each individual -
this is the humanism that we practise.*
The Daishonin teaches,
"Words echo the thoughts of the mind."**
It's time to engage in dialogue
with as many people as we can
that is full of the hope and confidence
we have in this practise,
so helping others to gain an understanding
and connection with Nichiren Buddhism!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Believe in this mandala with all your heart. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is like the roar of a lion. What sickness can therefore be an obstacle?"

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'It is said that Ueno [Nanjo Hyoe Shichiro], your deceased father, was a man of feeling. Since you [Nanjo Tokimitsu] are his son, perhaps you have inherited the outstanding qualities of his character. Blue dye is bluer even than indigo itself, and ice is colder than water. How wonderful it is, how wonderful!'
- (WND-2, 809; "Offerings in the Snow")

"The third key to family harmony is to be a family open to the world, making a positive contribution to society and fostering capable individuals who will build a brighter future.

"Today, in the new era of worldwide kosen-rufu, many new members with new strengths and abilities are emerging all around the globe. At the same time, we now have second-, third-, and fourth-generation members who have inherited their faith directly from parents and grandparents and are developing splendidly in the realm of kosen-rufu.

"As we approach the 100th anniversary of the Soka Gakkai's founding (in 2030), the most crucial element in building a strong and enduring foundation for kosen-rufu is the transmission of faith from one generation to the next within the family.

"There were model disciples during the Daishonin's lifetime who correctly learned and carried on the faith of their parents, growing from the equivalent of future division members to fine youth division members. Top on that list is Nanjo Tokimitsu.[1]

"Both Tokimitsu's father, Nanjo Hyoe Shichiro, and his mother, the lay nun Ueno,[2] received guidance from the Daishonin during times of difficulty and put it into practise in their lives.

"Hyoe Shichiro was originally a practitioner of the Pure Land (Nembutsu) teachings, but converted to faith in the Lotus Sutra after an apparent encounter with Nichiren Daishonin. He contracted a serious illness, but remained steadfast in faith and died a peaceful death. As the Daishonin described it, 'he . . . attained Buddhahood just as he was' (WND-1, 458), and 'ended his life in the frame of mind of a true believer [lit. had a correct and steadfast mind at the moment of death]' (cf. WND-2, 499)."

[1] Nanjo Tokimitsu (1259–1332): A staunch follower of the Daishonin and the steward of Ueno Village in Fuji District of Suruga Province. From the time the Daishonin took up residence on Mount Minobu, Nanjo Tokimitsu enjoyed a close relationship with the Daishonin, frequently receiving guidance from him. He played an admirable role defending the Daishonin's followers during the Atsuhara Persecution, for which the Daishonin dubbed him "Ueno the Worthy."

[2] Nanjo Hyoe Shichiro (d. 1265) was a retainer of the Kamakura military government. He was originally the steward of Nanjo Village in Izu Province, hence the name Nanjo. He later moved to become the steward of Ueno Village in Fuji District of Suruga Province, and therefore is also known as Ueno. His wife is referred to as the lay nun Ueno. Sometime between 1260 and 1264, while on an official tour of duty in Kamakura, Hyoe Shichiro met the Daishonin and converted to his teachings. After his death, his wife went on to raise their children alone while maintaining faith in the Daishonin's teachings.
