[sgi-tomyfriends-wagatomo] 22nd-28th Aug. 2022 Words of the Week, 22nd Aug. Daily Gosho & 23rd Aug. Daily Encouragement

* In "Daily Encouragement" a few days back we quoted the German poet and playwright Bertolt Brecht, the dates of his life were a little bit incorrect though, he did not live until he was 148! The correct dates are (1898-1956). Our apologies!...

A translation of "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Newspaper based on Ikeda Sensei's recent guidance, and more.

August 22nd-28th, 2022
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
Let's start anew
from our discussion meetings,
with fresh determination
and "spring from the earth" together!
The Daishonin encourages us to
"teach others
to the best of our abilities,
   even if it is only
    a single sentence or phrase."*
Let's create a surge of
happy, hope-filled dialogue
and spread wave upon wave
of such dialogue far and wide!

*"The True Aspect of All Phenomena"
(WND, Vol.1, page 386)
**On August 14th, 1947, Ikeda Sensei attended his first discussion meeting in Tokyo, where he encountered his mentor in life, Josei Toda, and expressed his determination in a poem
("Springing from the Earth")

Ten days later, he decided to take faith and joined the Soka Gakkai. "

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"When a tree has been transplanted, though fierce winds may blow, it will not topple if it has a firm stake to hold it up. But even a tree that has grown up in place may fall over if its roots are weak.

(Three Tripitaka Masters Pray for Rain

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'Wherever one may be, whether in the mountains, on the seas, in the skies or in the cities, one cannot escape death. Nevertheless, a sutra explains that even one's fixed karma can be changed. T'ien-t'ai's commentary also states that one can prolong one's fixed span of life.'

From "Propagation by the Wise" (WND–1, 753).

"'Faith for health and long life' is one of the Soka Gakkai's eternal guidelines. I hope that you will live wisely based on the Mystic Law so that you can enjoy healthy and fulfilling lives. It is also important to have regular checkups and seek appropriate treatment when you are ill.

"When battling sickness, you may at times feel scared and anxious, but please be assured that the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law steadfastly protects all who strive with courage as Bodhisattvas of the Earth. Moreover, the Daishonin teaches that Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the heart of the Lotus Sutra, has the immense beneficial power to even prolong our lives. With deep awareness in your mission for kosen-rufu, resolutely defeat the devil of illness!"

Towards a Hope-Filled Future with the Daishonin's Writings, Resolutely Defeating the Devil of Illness, from the May 25th, 2022 issue of the Seikyo Newspaper translation released July 2022.
