"Regarding his own harsh persecutions, the Daishonin says, 'My actions in defending the Law in this present life are calling forth retributions for the grave offences of my past' (WND-1, 282). He also declares, 'Without tribulation there would be no votary of the Lotus Sutra' (WND-1, 33), and shares his supreme joy that the hardships befalling him prove that he is the votary of the Lotus Sutra.
