* It seems them various major e-mail providers did NOT get this edition of "Words of the Week" yesterday so we are resending to hopefully get this through Yahoo Groups! Apologies to those who may get this a second time, delete where need be!...
A translation of "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shinbun based on President Ikeda's recent guidance, and more.
September 3rd - 9th, 2018
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
The more hardships
we courageously encounter in life,
the greater our life state develops.
Just as the Daishonin encourages us,
"the wise will rejoice,"*
let's write a golden
"day-to-day record of our existence,"**
by devoting ourselves to achieving kosen-rufu!
*"At such a time, the three obstacles and four devils will invariably appear, and the wise will rejoice while the foolish will retreat." -
WND-I, page 637
**"Hence the storehouse of the eighty-four thousand teachings represents a day-to-day record of one's own existence. This storehouse of the eighty thousand teachings is embodied in and contained within one's own mind. To use the mind to suppose that the Buddha or the Law or the pure land exist somewhere other than in one's own self and to seek them elsewhere is a delusion."- WND-II, page 843

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"I have believed it is most important to understand one's obligations to others, and made it my first duty to repay such debts of kindness. In this world, we owe four debts of gratitude. One who understands this is worthy to be called human, while one who does not is no more than an animal."
(Conversation between a Sage and an Unenlightened Man
- WND, Vol. 1, page 122)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"As disciples of Nichiren Daishonin, it is natural that we take a strict stance in clarifying what is true and what is erroneous in terms of the teaching. At the same time, however, our interactions with others must be based on a spirit of tolerance and generosity. This is the true way of life for a Buddhist.
"To take a strict stance in distinguishing between truth and error and to show generosity towards others--these two things are in no way incompatible and are essentially part of the same whole.
"Let's suppose, for example, that someone eats poison mushrooms and is rushed to see an excellent doctor. Irrespective of who the patient may be, the doctor naturally exhausts all possible means to save the person and also offers sincere words of encouragement. This, we might say, is an example of generosity towards others.
"It is also likely, however, that the doctor will warn the patient not to eat harmful mushrooms in future. I am sure there is no doctor with a conscience who would stand by indifferently while the patient declares: 'But poison mushrooms are delicious; I want to eat them again.' This corresponds to taking a strict stance with respect to the teachings.
"In both these instances, the doctor is motivated by their compassion and commitment to removing the patient's suffering. This is also the behaviour of a Buddhist."
The Wisdom for Creating Happiness and Peace, Part 3: Kosen-rufu and World Peace, Chap. 27: A Religion That Exists for People's Happiness—Part 3 of 3, 27.7 Embracing Others in Friendship with a Big, Magnanimous Heart, Oct. 14 1990, translated from the August 2017 edition of Daibyaku Renge, translation released July 2018.
