The Daishonin states,
"A hundred years of practice 
in the Land of Perfect Bliss 
cannot compare to the benefit 
gained from one day's practice 
in the impure world."*
Those who wholeheartedly 
devote themselves 
to achieving kosen-rufu,
without fail, accumulate 
immeasurable benefit
and are praised and admired 
by all the various Buddhas 
and protective forces of the universe!

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
To all of our courageous friends in Tohoku,*
who are brimming with a fresh youthful vow!
Through our beautiful unity of 
"Many in Body, One in Mind"
just as the Daishonin encourages us,
"When the pine flourishes, 
the cypress is overjoyed,"**
let's continue to build a solidarity 
of happiness in society!

*Tohoku is Northeast Japan consisting of Akita, Aomori, Fukushima, Iwate, Miyagi, and Yamagata prefectures.
**The Daishonin writes: "When the pine flourishes, the cypress is overjoyed; when grasses whither, orchids weep. Even insentient plants and trees share as one a friend's joys and sorrows" (WND-2, page 964). To rejoice in our friends' happiness, to sincerely applaud their achievements, to be by their side and encourage them when they are struggling, to share both good times and hard times and weather life's difficulties together—true unity is born of such warmhearted and humanistic ties.  Mr. Toda once explained unity very simply: To say to another member, "Are you also facing difficulties? Are you struggling to make ends meet, too? Are you also suffering? Then, together let's strengthen our faith!" This is what it means to be united in purpose.

"Referring to the story of King Rinda, in which the king is invigorated by the neighing of white horses, who only do so when they hear white swans, the Daishonin writes: 'The white horses are Nichiren, and the white swans are my followers. The neighing of the white horses is the sound of our voices chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo' (WND-1, 989). He also declares that the sound of daimoku will brighten the light of Brahma and Shakra and all the heavenly deities, who will thus not fail to guard and protect us (cf. WND-1, 989-90). 

"No matter what hardships we encounter, let's always remember that we have daimoku, that we chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to overcome them."

To all of our dear friends in Hokkaido,

"Citadel of the Three Founding Presidents,"*
where triumphant histories 
achieved by the people shine brightly..
With our courageous faith and vigorous practice,
let our voices, full of hope, ring out loud 
in every corner of our beloved land 
where we proudly fulfil our missions!

*In the Soka Gakkai, Hokkaido, in the north of Japan, is known as the "Citadel of the Three Founding Presidents." Mr. Makiguchi spent most of his youth in Hokkaido, while Mr. Toda spent most of his early years there before moving to Tokyo. Succeeding the spirit of his mentor, President Ikeda built a vibrant kosen-rufu movement in Hokkaido through his own efforts.

for the sake of kosen-rufu

that sounds the dawn
of victory and glory
loud and wide!

* Shikoku is the 4th largest island of Japan in the south west of Japan. "Shikoku" basically means "four provinces." It has one of the smallest populations and is often a forgotten area.

"Sixty-seven years ago (1952), I threw myself into action as an advisor of Kamata Chapter. I sought  to express my gratitude to Nichiren Daishonin and second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda by crowning their birth month of February with a significant expansion of membership. 

"Focusing on the unit (today's group), the smallest organisational component at the time, I strove alongside my fellow members united in the spirit of 'many in body one in mind.' As a result, we broke through all previous propagation records and opened the way forwards in our movement for kosen-rufu.

"I offered the members three guidelines: (1) Let's start with chanting daimoku, (2) Let's share our experiences in faith and (3) Let's treasure our neighbours. This was the beginning of the Soka Gakkai tradition of making February a month for propagation activities. 

"We had no special strategy. Each member simply focused on those in their immediate environment and courageously engaged them in dialogue."
