When I, Nichiren, first took faith in the Lotus Sutra, I was like a single drop of water or a single particle of dust in all the country of Japan. But later, when two people, three people, ten people, and eventually a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand and a million people come to recite the Lotus Sutra and transmit it to others, then they will form a Mount Sumeru of perfect enlightenment, an ocean of great nirvana."

"The Daishonin writes: 'Illness gives rise to the resolve to attain the way' (WND–1, 937). 'The resolve to attain the way' is the spirit to seek the Buddha way, to enter the path to attaining Buddhahood.

"By chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and confronting illness with the determination not to be defeated by it, we can expand our inner life state of Buddhahood and lead deeper, stronger and nobler lives. We can then experience the benefit of seeing sickness, ageing and death for what they are and facing them without fear.

"Discussing the fact that the Buddha also had some ills and worries, Mr. Toda said that if the Buddha didn't experience illness himself, he wouldn't be relatable to those who were suffering from illness and therefore could not lead them to enlightenment.* In this way, he asserted that illness, too, has profound meaning in our lives."

the more brilliantly they shine.
Believing in all our potential,
let's "diligently polish 

 our mirror day and night"*
by continually chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!

*Gosho: "This is similar to a tarnished mirror** that will shine like a jewel when polished. A mind now clouded by the illusions of the innate darkness of life is like a tarnished mirror, but when polished, it is sure to become like a clear mirror, reflecting the essential nature of phenomena and the true aspect of reality. Arouse deep faith, and diligently polish your mirror day and night. How should you polish it? Only by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo." (WND-1, page 4)

"Nichiren Daishonin clarified three key points in ensuring that the heritage of the ultimate Law of life and death continues to flow in the community of practitioners.

"First is unshakable conviction in faith that the Buddha, the Mystic Law, and we ordinary human beings 'are in no way different or separate from one another' (WND- 1, 216).

"Second is steadfast faith that never 'forsakes the Lotus Sutra in any lifetime whatsoever throughout eternity' (cf. WND-1, 217).

"And third is advancing with united faith towards realising the great vow for kosen-rufu as fellow practitioners one in purpose, 'transcending all differences among themselves to become as inseparable as fish and the water in which they swim' (WND-1, 217).

That is why it's important to view things from the perspective of faith that illness is 'the Buddha's design' (WND – 1, 937). Because we embrace the great teaching of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, there is no karmic suffering we cannot overcome. We have no need for worry or fear. What counts is how we face illness, our attitude in dealing with it."

*Making the world a better place is something that starts in our relationships with our neighbours, in our immediate circumstances. Shin'ichi Yamamoto was always saying that Soka Gakkai members should take responsibility for the happiness of their communities. This guidance had taken deep root in members' hearts and encouraged them to awaken to their vital mission to contribute to society. The people are like the earth. "'Since childhood, I, Nichiren, have never prayed for the secular things of this life but have single-mindedly sort to become a Buddha. Of late, however, I have been ceaselessly praying for your sake to the Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha and the God of the sun, for I am convinced that you are a person who can inherit the soul of the Lotus Sutra. (WND–1, 839; "The Hero of the World")

"The Daishonin begins the above passage stating that he has never prayed for his own mundane concerns but only single-mindedly sought to become a Buddha. His life was a series of struggles against obstacles and persecutions arising from his efforts to teach and spread the Mystic Law for the happiness of all people in the Latter Day, in accord with his wish to enable himself and others to attain Buddhahood.

"'A person who can inherit the soul of the Lotus Sutra' refers to a disciple who, taking the Daishonin's words deeply to heart, battles difficulties based on the Mystic Law, just as the Daishonin did. 'The soul of the Lotus Sutra" is the teaching of universal enlightenment that is the sutra's essence. 'A person who can inherit the soul of the Lotus Sutra' is therefore someone who dedicate their life to propagating this principle. A disciple who stands up with the same great vow and spirit as the Daishonin can ensure the eternal transmission of the Law.

"That is why, the Daishonin says, he continues to pray earnestly for the triumph of such a disciple. The triumph of the disciple is the triumph of the mentor and of Buddhism."

"In 'On the Buddha's Prophecy,' the Daishonin stresses the importance of successors, stating: 'Even when… [Buddhist] priests set out from Japan to take some sutras [back] to China, no one was found there who could embrace these sutras and teach them to others. It was as though there were only wooden or stone statues garbed in priests' robes and carrying begging bowls' (WND–1, 401). In other words, without people who embrace and transmit the Buddhist teachings, Buddhism will become as lifeless as 'wooden or stone statues garbed in priests robes and carrying begging bowls.' The undeniable reality is that no group or organisation will endure without people who 'embrace and teach' its ideals to others—in other words, without successors.

"The simile describing priests whose lack of action is reminiscent of wooden or stone statues dressed in priests robes underscores a unique characteristic of Buddhism – that without practitioners to carry on and spread it, the spirit of Buddhism will be lost, even though its teachings and images may survive. Buddhism only remains alive and vital through real living people carrying on the teachings in their actions."
