"There is a Hawaiian saying of which I am very fond: He ola i ka leo kahea, meaning 'There is life in a [hospitable] call.'*

"Nothing warms the heart more than words filled with kindness and care.

"Hawaii's wonderful greeting 'Aloha' is familiar to all around the world. It is as beloved as the famous Hawaiian spirit of hospitality.

"'Aloha' is used for both 'hello' and 'goodbye.' Brief as it is, the word is rich in meaning, expressing love, kindness, empathy, acceptance and compassion, as well as gratitude and respect for the people and the natural environment that have nurtured us.

"The aloha spirit is encapsulated in the so-called Aloha Chant, which translates in English to the effect:

"Gentle are the people of Hawaii

Working together in harmony

Pleasant are their thoughts

Humble are their ways

Patience will bring victory!

"Denmark was the first stop on my first visit to Europe in 1961. On the day of my arrival, a youth division leader from Japan came to see me. He was an engineer in Europe on business and had taken time out of his schedule to do so. I was delighted by his seeking spirit.

"I shared these words of Nichiren Daishonin with him: 'You must not spend your lives in vain and regret it for ten thousand years to come' (WND–1, 622). Now is your time, I encouraged him, to undertake the work that is yours alone, to forge yourself as a person and accumulate eternal good fortune. He responded to my call and joined with fellow members to create a great mountain range of capable individuals in Hiroshima, the city of peace and the entire Chukoku region.

at all times!

The trust from our fellow members

that unwaveringly makes 

for our development.

*"Leaders should always respect the character and rights of those who come to them for advice in this area and never divulge anything they are told. Never violate members' privacy by talking about the situation with anyone, not even your family or friends. Please remember, should you fail in this, you not only hurt the parties involved but compromise the trust people have in you and the Soka Gakkai, disqualifying yourself as a leader. I wish to reaffirm that this is an iron fast rule all leaders need to abide by, not just in Germany but in Japan and everywhere else."

"Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and Jose Toda, first and second Soka Gakkai presidents, directly inherited Nichiren Daishonin's spirit, selflessly dedicating their lives to spreading the Mystic Law. Following in their footsteps united by the bonds of mentor and disciple, we of the Soka Gakkai have vanquished the three powerful enemies* and forged ahead in our efforts for kosen-rufu. The Daishonin would surely affirm that today the Soka Gakkai is without a doubt 'the foremost ally of the Lotus Sutra' in the world.

"Our admirable members, making the Daishonin's spirit their own, are showing their devotion by working tirelessly to contribute to the noble cause of 'establishing the correct teaching for the peace of the land.' "I recall British historian Arnold J. Toynbee (1889-1975) citing four qualities required by leaders in difficult times: vision, moderation, tolerance and endurance. He regarded tolerance as the consummate ability to cheerfully endure and overcome hardships.

"In The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, Nichiren Daishonin states: 'Concerning…the practices carried out by Nichiren and his followers now in the Latter Day of the Law, you should understand that, when one practices the Lotus Sutra under such circumstances, difficulties will arise and those are to be looked on as [peace and comfort]' (cf. OTT, 115). Through our Soka Gakkai activities, we are buoyantly carrying out in today's world the essence of the Buddhist practice the Daishonin describes."
