[sgi-tomyfriends-wagatomo] 22nd-28th March, 2021 Words of the Week, 22nd March Daily Gosho and 23rd March Daily Encouragement

* There's quite a bit here today but please try to read it all some time during the day. It won't take too long!...

A translation of "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Newspaper based on President Ikeda's recent guidance, and more.

March 22nd-28th, 2021
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
Let's offer warm, heartfelt and
thoughtful words of encouragement
to all of our friends who're starting
a new school, job, etc..
When we live out our lives
based on the Mystic Law,
no matter where we might be,
it will always be the
Land of Eternally Tranquil Light.*
Dynamically, take that
first step forwards to victory!

*"Buddhism teaches that the place we reside is transformed into a Buddha land, a land of Eternally Tranquil Light.  To make that happen, we need to decide that our present location is itself the grand stage upon which we will carry out our mission and then take courageous action to advance kosen-rufu.  Those who strive courageously are filled with youthful vigour.  Their lives abound with hope and joy. And the great path towards a state of absolute happiness will open before them without fail."
(Ref. NHR, Vol. 10, "A New Course" chapter)

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"For instance, there are certain Hinayana bodhisattvas, not yet freed from delusion, who draw evil karma to themselves by their own compassionate vow. If they see that their father and mother have fallen into hell and are suffering greatly, they will deliberately create the appropriate karma in hopes that they too may fall into hell and share in and take their suffering upon themselves. Thus suffering is a joy to them."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"... You might often find yourself feeling lost, aimless or unmotivated. The negativity in your heart that gives rise to such feelings can be regarded as the workings of devilish functions. For instance, you might start studying but then quickly become distracted. You might decide to take on a fresh challenge only to be overcome by the temptation to kick back and relax. These examples can be considered the workings of the devilish functions within your own life.

"How, then, can you defeat them? Since devilish functions arise in confusing forms, it's important to see them for what they really are. As soon as you identify them as devilish functions, they will disperse.

"Citing the words of the Great Teacher T'ien-t'ai, the Daishonin wrote: "One should be neither influenced nor frightened by [the three obstacles and four devils]"* (WND – 1, 501). Bringing forth the life state of Buddhahood will enable you to vanquish devilish functions without being swayed or intimidated by them. Our daily practice of gongyo and chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo are key to strengthening this life force of Buddhahood within us.

"When you become stronger in this way, you can transform any obstacle or negative function into a springboard for personal growth. When you advance based on faith, the Daishonin's warning that devilish functions are certain to emerge becomes a source of powerful encouragement, a source of reassurance that you can achieve great development and victory without fail."

Building a Bright Future Based on Our Vow, [15] The Ikegami Brothers — Part 1 [of 2], Be Wise People Who Will Achieve Victory in Your Youth, from the June 1st, 2019 issue of the Mirai [Future] Journal, translation released February 2021

* Three obstacles and four devils: various obstacles and hindrances to the practice of Buddhism. The three obstacles are (1) the obstacle of earthly desires, (2) the obstacle of karma and (3) the obstacle of retribution. The four devils are (1) the hindrance of the five components, (2) the hindrance of earthly desires (3) the hindrance of death and (4) the hindrance of the devil king.
