[sgi-tomyfriends-wagatomo] 7th-13th Feb. 2022 Words of the Week, 7th Feb. Daily Gosho + 8th Feb. Daily Encouragement

A translation of "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Newspaper based on President Ikeda's recent guidance, and more.

February 7th-13th, 2022
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
The Daishonin teaches,
"When one gives
   other people strength,
 one gives oneself strength, too."*
Engaging in dialogue of
"removing suffering and giving joy"**
is the very way to guide
both ourselves and others
towards attaining Buddhahood.
Let's light a flame
of encouragement for others
that burns ever so brightly!

*"When one lights a torch for someone at night, one brings light not only to another person but to oneself as well. Likewise, when one livens other people's complexions, one livens one's own, too, when one gives them strength, one gives oneself strength, too, when one prolongs their lives, one prolongs one's own life as well."
- "On Clothing and Food"
(WND, Vol.2, page 1066)

**"The Buddha does not simply stop at relieving suffering, but teaches people the correct way of life and calls on them to transform their inner state of being and actually attain happiness. Shakubuku is none other than this compassionate practice of "removing suffering and imparting joy."

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Now you and I are joined together as teacher and lay supporter. But so long as you live, endowed with the sense organs and subject to the outflows of defilement, you must follow and obey the ruler of the nation. Thus you are going to face this present perilous situation, but I can hardly hold back my tears [thinking how your personal crisis will serve to relieve you of your past offenses].  In what future existence shall we meet again? I urge you to single-mindedly aspire to be reborn in the pure land of Eagle Peak [where we will meet]. Though your body must face the perils of the present crisis, your mind is one with the mind of the Buddha. And though in your present existence you must enter the realm of asuras, in your future existence you will without doubt dwell in the Buddha land."

(The Refutation of the Three Great Teachers
- WND, Vol. 2, page 958)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"When a good teaching and a good teacher are present, the Daishonin indicates, the key to 'banishing disasters from the land' hinges on whether we are good disciples. He states: 'As long as they [my followers] are together with Nichiren, they will reach the treasure land [that is, attain Buddhahood]. But if they are not together with him, they will fall into the great citadel of the Avichi Hell' [OTT, 78]. 'Together with Nichiren,' here, means a life state where we are always united with the Daishonin. It expresses the resolve to always strive together with our mentor. This way, we will attain a state of life equal to that of the Buddha. When we strive at all times to realise the great vow for kosen-rufu, we embody the words 'Morning after morning we rise up with the Buddha, evening after evening we lie down with the Buddha' (OTT, 83)."

The Buddhism of the Sun—Illuminating the World, [70] Everything Begins with Prayer Infused with the Shared Vow of Mentor and Disciple, Eternally Following the Great Path of the Oneness of Mentor and Disciple, from the February 2021 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translation released December 2021.
