He explains that when a caged bird sings, birds flying in the sky come to gather around it. Seeing this, the bird in the cage tries to get out to join them (see WND-1, 131). In the same way, when you chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, you can call forth your positive potential. You can also draw forth the positive potential in your friends, family and others around you.

"Cherry blossoms undergo a phenomenon known as "breaking dormancy." This is when their buds, which first form in summer and then go to "sleep" in autumn, are awakened by the cold of winter to prepare for their blossoming in spring. People, too, must brave the challenges of winter to bring their full strength and potential to bloom.

"The Daishonin compares the supreme life state of Buddhahood to cherry blossoms (See WND-1, 1137). There are flowers waiting to bloom inside your hearts as well. Even when things don't go as you'd hoped, if you continue to nourish yourself with the sunlight of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, your worries will produce flowers of wisdom, your hardships flowers of strength and your sorrows flowers of kindness. Your inner brilliance will illuminate not only your own life, but your family, friends and society at large."

"...unity is the essence of faith and the main principle for advancing kosen-rufu. If leaders can't get along and unite with one another, they must recognise that devilish functions already control them. This is because such discord destroys the harmonious unity of practitioners and sows confusion in the Soka Gakkai.

"We need courage to unite. Without courage, you may avoid openly sharing your thoughts or communicating directly with those you find difficult. And that will result in further misunderstandings.

"If you have a problematic relationship with someone, have the courage to reach out and talk with them, regardless of age or organisational position."
