-- DAILY GOSHO --
"A fire burns higher when logs are added, and a strong wind makes a kālakula grow larger. The pine tree lives for ten thousand years, and therefore its boughs become bent and twisted. The votary of the Lotus Sutra is like the fire and the kālakula, while his persecutions are like the logs and the wind. The votary of the Lotus Sutra is the Thus Come One whose life span is immeasurable; no wonder his practice is hindered, just as the pine tree's branches are bent or broken. From now on, always remember the words 'This sutra is hard to uphold.'"

--- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ---
"'Recently I offered up a portion of the benefit from a recitation of the [Lotus Sutra] for the peaceful repose of your late husband [Nanjo Hyoe Shichiro]. I was unable to restrain my tears, thinking how important it is that people have fine children [such as Nanjo Tokimitsu]. King Wonderful Adornment was led to the way of the Buddha by his two sons [Pure Storehouse and Pure Eye].'
From "Reply to Ueno" (WND-2, 495).
"The benefit of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo pervades the ten directions and three existences past, present and future enfolding our deceased loved ones and friends in the light of infinite happiness and good fortune.* The bonds of those connected by the Mystic Law are eternal, transcending life and death.
"The Daishonin watches over us as we walk this path that enables us to repay our gratitude to our parents on the most profound level. Our unstinting efforts for kosen-rufu in the chosen places of our mission are the best possible offering we can make for the eternal happiness of our departed loved ones. They are a light of hope for the future.
"Let's enact inspiring dramas of spiritual triumph, savouring joy in both life and death!"
Towards a Hope-Filled Future with the Daishonin's Writings, The Bonds of Those Connected by the Mystic Law Are Eternal, September 21st, 2023 translation released November 2023.
*Traditionally in Japan, Buddhist memorial services for the deceased are held during respective seven-day periods coinciding with the spring and autumn equinoxes. The autumn equinox, which this year fell on September 23, is marked as a national holiday in Japan.
