"To be victorious in life, it is crucial to keep the desire to learn alive, however challenging the situation might be.

"Top athletes all continue to learn. Because they are aiming to be the best in their given sport, they are always avidly seeking to absorb anything new that may help them improve and develop their skills. Those who stop learning can never become first-rate.

"And an athlete's youth extends beyond their days in compe-tition. In fact, that's where their true battle begins. The spirit of learning is essential for growth and victory throughout life.

Sometimes you may lose even though you did your best. But young people who pull themselves up again and move forwards in spite of such defeats are truly commendable. "By the same token, victory may become the cause for future defeat. When you achieve a victory, that is the time to buckle down and prepare yourself for the next challenge. Carelessness and arrogance are the greatest foes."

"There's a famous story in track and field about breaking the four-minute mile barrier. For many years, both the general public and sports experts believed that it was impossible to run the mile race (about 1,600 meters) in under four minutes.

"But in 1954, Roger Bannister (1929-2018), a British university student at the time, ran the mile in less than four minutes after much training using the latest scientific methods. Soon after, numerous athletes began to break the four-minute barrier. The assumption that it was impossible to run a mile in less than four minutes had created a mental block that restricted the abilities of runners.

"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'Though someone may have great physical strength, if they lack a resolute spirit, even their many abilities will be of no use" (WND-1, 614).

"You all possess the foremost tool for winning in spirit-your daily practice of gongyo and chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. By chanting, the mind can attain an unrivaled strength, no matter what the circumstances. As the Daishonin says: 'Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is like the roar of a lion' (WND-1, 412)."

"'A hundred years of practice in the Land of Perfect Bliss cannot compare to the benefit gained from one day's practise in the impure world. Two thousand years of propagating Buddhism during the Former and Middle Days of the Law are inferior to an hour of propagation in the Latter Day of the Law.'

From "On Repaying Debts of Gratitude (WND-1, 736).

"Spreading the Mystic Law in the corrupt age of the Latter Day of the Law is exceptionally difficult. How great then is the benefit we accumulate through striving to fulfil our mission as Bodhisattvas of the Earth!

"None of the struggles we undergo for the sake of Buddhism is ever wasted. Our efforts to earnestly chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and exert ourselves in Soka Gakkai activities amid challenging circumstances will become boundless and immeasurable 'treasures of the heart' (WND-1, 851).

"The true nobility of Soka Gakkai members lies in our sincere efforts to embody Nichiren Daishonin's teachings in our daily lives. A powerful expression of this spirit appears in the passage: '"Joy" means that oneself and others together experience joy' (OTT, 146). This is from The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, in which the Daishonin encapsulates the essence of mentor and disciple.

"For the sake of the genuine happiness of others, our fellow members spare neither time nor effort. We understand that such selfless actions form the very foundation of our own human revolution and the transformation of karma. Without calculation or thought of reward, we simply reach out with heartfelt sincerity to support and encourage those around us."

--- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ---

"'Many hear about and accept this sutra [the Lotus Sutra], but when great obstacles arise, just as they were told would happen, few remember it [and its warning that "This sutra is hard to uphold" (LSOC11,

220)] and bear it firmly in mind. To accept is easy; to continue is difficult. But Buddhahood lies in continuing faith.'

"From 'The Difficulty of Sustaining Faith' (WND-1, 471).

"Here, Nichiren Daishonin encourages his disciple Shijo Kingo, who, in the face of continuous hardships, had complained to him about his situation. Courageous individuals who persevere in faith always bear in mind the words: 'This sutra is hard to uphold' (LSOC11, 220).

"Taking the Daishonin's encouragement to heart, Shijo Kingo strove with an invincible spirit to demonstrate actual proof of victory. This was his human revolution.

"Faith is the challenge to continue practicing, no matter what. Let's support and encourage one another as good comrades in faith, as we advance with dauntless courage to attain Buddhahood in this lifetime."

--- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ---

"'The ancient Chinese general] Li Kuang was able to pierce a rock with his arrow because he fully believed it to be the tiger that had killed his father. How much more so is this [the importance of one's determination in faith] true in Buddhism!'

From "The Real Aspect of the Gohonzon" (WND-1, 833).

"The power of our inner determination is immeasurable, and its ultimate expression is unshakable and courageous faith in the Mystic Law. The sound of our voices resolutely chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo reverberates throughout the entire universe, turning everything into a positive force that will support and protect us.

"When you hit a wall, chant daimoku. When things are not going as hoped, pray with even greater resolve until you win through.

"Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo bravely and vigorously enables us to bring forth the wisdom to surmount adversity and move things dynamically toward fresh victories."
