--- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ---

"There's a famous story in track and field about breaking the four-minute mile barrier. For many years, both the general public and sports experts believed that it was impossible to run the mile race (about 1,600 meters) in under four minutes.

"But in 1954, Roger Bannister (1929-2018), a British university student at the time, ran the mile in less than four minutes after much training using the latest scientific methods. Soon after, numerous athletes began to break the four-minute barrier. The assumption that it was impossible to run a mile in less than four minutes had created a mental block that restricted the abilities of runners.

"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'Though someone may have great physical strength, if they lack a resolute spirit, even their many abilities will be of no use" (WND-1, 614).

"You all possess the foremost tool for winning in spirit-your daily practice of gongyo and chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. By chanting, the mind can attain an unrivaled strength, no matter what the circumstances. As the Daishonin says: 'Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is like the roar of a lion' (WND-1, 412)."
