--- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ---

On September 25th, 1957, shortly after second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda made his Declaration Calling for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons, he appointed me as the first greater block (present-day ward) leader of Tokyo's Katsushika Ward, seeking to create an organisation firmly rooted in the local community.

At that time, the Katsushika members and I, who shared a close bond as fellow residents of Tokyo's old downtown area, made the following four-point pledge:

1. Our practice of gongyo and chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the source of happiness and victory. Therefore, let's advance with strong daimoku that has the rhythm of a majestic horse galloping through the heavens and the power to move the entire universe.

2. The Soka Gakkai is a beautiful realm of friendship and camaraderie. Therefore, let's engage in warmhearted interactions that brim with joy and benefit.

3. The shared struggle of mentor and disciple means responding to our mentor in the place of our mission for kosen-rufu and creating a wonderful record of achievement. Therefore, let's fully exert ourselves as disciples, in a way that is true to ourselves.

4. Faith is another name for courage. Therefore, let's win with courage in every challenge.
