"Life itself is a continuous exploration of the unknown. There may be times when we encounter unexpected storms of adversity. But it is in challenging those difficulties that we find the way to break through them and win. As long as we don't lose sight of our goals, not a single day will ever be wasted; each day will be precious and meaningful, filling us with hope and allowing us to grow."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the source of unlimited possibilities!
It is the wellspring of boundless hope and courage.
Nichiren Daishonin assures us: "No prayer will go unanswered."*
So let's advance with resolute, unwavering faith.
*"If you have faith in this Gohonzon and chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo even for a short while, no prayer will go unanswered, no offence unexpiated, no good fortune unbestowed, and all righteousness proven." (Commentary on "The True Object of Worship" by Nichikan Shonin)
** When we chant daimoku just as the Daishonin instructs, our voices resonate throughout the entire universe. Just as a soft voice can be transformed into a booming voice through the use of a good megaphone, when we chant Nam-myoho-renge- kyo with heartfelt prayer, we can move the entire universe. As Nichikan, the twenty-sixth high priest, says: "[If you have faith in this Gohonzon and chant Nam-myoho-renge- kyo even for a short while] no prayer will go unanswered, no offence unexpiated, no good fortune unbestowed, and all righteousness proven."
Nichiren Daishonin says that it is not difficult for those who chant the daimoku of the Lotus Sutra to become Buddhas equal to Shakyamuni (WND, 1030). This statement is very significant. He says this because the Mystic Law is the origin of all Buddhas.
- (The Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra, Volume 5, page 152)
Wednesday, January 29th, 2013
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"What is most important is that, by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo alone, you can attain Buddhahood. It will no doubt depend on the strength of your faith. To have faith is the basis of Buddhism."
(The Real Aspect of the Gohonzon - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 832)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"With solid determination, Roald Amundsen (1872–1928), the first person to reach the South Pole and his team prepared assiduously to achieve their dream of reaching the South Pole. From the days of his youth, Amundsen believed that firm resolve was indispensable for attaining one's aims.[1] Such determination can be described as the earnest commitment to keep moving steadily ahead like an accurate clock, making every effort and preparation necessary for carrying out one's goals in daily life.
"In one of his letters, the Daishonin strongly cautions his youthful disciple Nanjo Tokimitsu to never let his mind stray, but to remain firm in faith at all times (cf. WND-2, 638).
"A strong determination is not something that changes or shifts with momentary feelings or emotions. Neither is a vow. Great things are only accomplished with the resolve or commitment to continue challenging oneself, taking one step forwards after another, no matter what."

"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'One who listens to even a sentence or phrase of the [Lotus] sutra and cherishes it deep in one's heart may be likened to a ship that crosses the sea of the sufferings of birth and death' (WND-1, 33). In our world today, rife with the four sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death, our efforts to talk with others about Nichiren Buddhism can open the way to happiness and peace pervaded by the noble virtues of eternity, happiness, true self, and purity for both ourselves and others. The higher the breakers of adversity buffeting our times, the more steadily and powerfully our great ship of Soka must advance.

Something uncommon also occurs when an ordinary person attains Buddhahood. At such a time, the three obstacles and four devils will invariably appear, and the wise will rejoice while the foolish will retreat."

"If you're only studying for yourself, eventually you will hit a dead end. But when you have the larger purposes of studying for the sake of others, for society, and for the world, studying becomes fun. And in the process, you build yourself into a great human being, too.
"...The more you study, the greater your dreams expand. You become more capable and accomplished, and are able to help others. You can bring smiles to people's faces and impart joy. You end up creating a wonderful environment around you.
"...There's no need to look back with regrets. You can start studying from now, from the place in life where you are at this moment.
"When she was 60 years old, the German author Malwida von Meysenbug (1816–1903) declared: 'I study and study. . . . For the sole reason of being able to study more would I wish to be young again!'[1]
"Educational background is not the same as learning or mental ability, and it is even less a measure of the full scope of a person's potential. A person's true capability can be measured by their desire to continue learning.

"Learning is a right and a pleasure. Nothing is more enjoyable.
"The brutality of war, however, robbed the young people of my age of that right and joy. I was determined that the next generation should not experience the same deprivation, and I have fought all my life for peace.
"That's why I would like to share with you these words of the German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832), whom I read avidly in my youth: 'What a world of delight lies in learning!'[1]
"When you throw yourself wholeheartedly into the world of learning, you'll make many new and exciting discoveries. It was this joy that pulsed vibrantly in Goethe's life.
"Goethe—a poet, novelist, playwright, naturalist, and political leader—continued studying and learning throughout his life.
"I am presently engaged in a dialogue about Goethe with Dr. Manfred Osten, advisory board member of the Goethe Society in Weimar, Germany.[2] At the start of our dialogue, Dr. Osten spoke of Goethe's conviction that no one can take away what you have learned through arduous effort—it is yours forever.
"Human beings are born to learn. Life is an ongoing learning process.
"Even if we sometimes forget the exact content of what we have learned, the desire to learn forever adorns our lives."

"Our discussion meetings, a tradition since the Soka Gakkai's founding, are 'gatherings of Buddhas.' They brim with the vow to help everyone we share a connection with become happy and attain Buddhahood in this lifetime, and to make our communities flourish as realms of happiness, peace, and prosperity based on the humanistic principles of Nichiren Buddhism. That's why attending discussion meetings is a source of immeasurable benefit. They also provide a forum where members can study Buddhism, bring their lives to shine with the joy of Buddhahood, and move forwards reinvigorated and revitalised. In addition, hearing members' experiences in faith at discussion meetings can inspire participants to face the challenges in their lives with a renewed sense of determination.
"Discussion meetings are the most uplifting, enjoyable, friendly, and warm realms of mutual encouragement to be found anywhere."

"I entrust you with the propagation of Buddhism in your province. It is stated that 'the seeds of Buddhahood sprout as a result of conditions, and for this reason they preach the single vehicle.'"

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Though you may have defeats and failures, you mustn't allow them to make you downcast and pessimistic. The only real defeat is when you give up and devalue yourself. Those who are patient and persistent win out in the end. Never forget that chanting and our Buddhist practice allow us to develop that tenacity."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 16th Jan. 2013 To My Friends and Daily Gosho + 17th Jan. 2013 Daily Enc.
A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Laboremus - Let's get to work!*
Today, again, with a youthful spirit,
let's advance and challenge.
If we set out on our day with fervor and passion
a path will certainly open up!
* Laboremus - (Latin) - Let's get to work! This was the motto of the historian Arnold Toynbee.**
** New Human Revolution,Volume 16, Dialogue-31:
Toynbee replied to Shin'ichi's question by saying that he awoke at 6:45 every morning, and after preparing breakfast for himself and his wife and making the bed, he began working at 9:00 a.m. "The important thing," he said, "is to just start working. If you wait until you feel like working, you'll never accomplish anything." He added that it gave him satisfaction to think that his writing contributed something to the world.
Shin'ichi then asked him if he had any personal mottos. Toynbee immediately responded: "Laboremus—that's Latin for 'Let's get to work.'" He then went on to explain that the origin of this saying traced back to the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus, who lived from the end of the second to the beginning of the third century. Apparently, Septimius fell seriously ill while leading a campaign in Britannia (modern England). He realised he was about to die. It had been his practice to deliver an inspiring motto to his troops on a daily basis, and even as he faced his end, he rallied his strength and offered them one last bit of encouragement: "Laboremus!"

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"No successful person has led a life that was only smooth sailing without exerting great effort. No one has ever triumphed in life without experiencing failures and setbacks. True victors in life are those who have persevered arduously through hardship, stood on the edge of despair many times, yet pressed forward tenaciously, again and again."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In a way, life can be described as a struggle to never lose hope. Life, and especially the days of your youth, can seem like a series of problems and worries—when your test scores are bad, or your family situation is tough, or you're struggling with money, or when there's a huge gap between your ideals and reality, and so forth. You may start to think that you're no good, that you're helpless, and feel negative about yourself and despair. But that's not true. Buddhism teaches that we are all born with a noble mission in life and can all shine in our own unique way. And how do we make ourselves shine? Through persevering.
"Certainly things don't always work out as we hope. We experience failures, we have setbacks, and at times we may even lose our drive for life. But at such times, we need to get back on our feet again and advance towards our goals. Having that kind of perseverance is crucial.
"Tell yourself, 'It's fine that I'm not capable enough yet! I don't care how others see me!' filled with the determination to not be defeated!"
