"In these times marked by uncertainty, both we as individuals and society as a whole face many challenges. Precisely because we live in an age of conflict and confusion, the hope-filled philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism—with its power to awaken and draw forth the invincible life-state of Buddhahood from within all people—shines so brightly. And shining brilliantly, as well, is the grassroots movement of the SGI, whose members are working to expand a global network of happiness and peace as ordinary people supporting and encouraging one another and overcoming their problems with courage and wisdom.

"My mentor, second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda, declared with great conviction: 'Faith, simply speaking, means to make up your mind. And as long as you're going to make up your mind, make up your mind to succeed!'

"Facing the unremitting slander and abuse and unparalleled hatred and jealousy predicted in the Lotus Sutra [as obstacles that would befall its practitioners in the Latter Day of the Law], we of the SGI have overcome all adversity and resolutely triumphed in our endeavours for the sake of Buddhism, the happiness of others, and the welfare of society.

"Let us chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo—a rhythm inspiring 'the greatest of all joys' (OTT, 212)—with our voices resounding even more vibrantly. And with the strongest and most beautiful unity in diversity, let us win in every challenge and continue our efforts to create a peaceful world—a "Capital of Eternally Tranquil Light" (WND-1, 313)—by spreading the humanistic ideals of Nichiren Buddhism."
