-- TO MY FRIENDS --
To the extent that we have experienced troubles ourselves,
we can empathize and understand the hearts of others.
By overcoming various difficulties
we can cultivate the strength
to become truly great human beings.
Never ever be defeated by any form of hardship!

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

"As long as we continue to dedicate our lives to kosen-rufu as votaries, or genuine practitioners, of the Lotus Sutra, we will find ourselves engaged in an endless struggle against devilish forces―the three powerful enemies and the three obstacles and four devils.

"This was true of Shakyamuni as well. An early Buddhist scripture states that upon attaining enlightenment under the bodhi tree after rejecting the initial temptations of Mara, the devil king, Shakyamuni continued to be assailed by negative influences that tried to cajole and threaten him into abandoning the idea of teaching others the truth to which he became enlightened.

"Attaining enlightenment doesn't mean that there is no need to continue one's Buddhist practice, or that one will never have to battle devilish functions again.

"What is the purpose of attaining enlightenment? It is to be able to help all people achieve happiness. The real work starts after one gains enlightenment. That's when devilish influences attack even more fiercely. Those who continue striving in this struggle are Buddhas."
