A translation of President Ikeda's "Words of the Week"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

April 18th-24th, 2016
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
This year marks the 65th anniversary
of the Seikyo Shimbun's establishment.*
We are so grateful to all of the newspaper deliverers,
local reporters and those who promote
its subscription in many ways,
for their continued selfless dedication.
From now, let's make more effort than ever
to enhance the power of courageous words
that are never defeated
by any kind of challenge or hardship!

*The Seikyo Shimbun was established on April 20, 1951. At that time, it was a two-page newspaper with a circulation of 5,000 that was published every 10 days. The frequency of publication increased steadily, to once a week, twice and then three times a week, until it finally became a daily in July 1965. It is one of the leading newspapers in Japan currently having a circulation of about 5.5 million, making it the third largest circulated daily newspaper in Japan and fourth in the world.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"The greater the hardships befalling him, the greater the delight he feels, because of his strong faith. Doesn't a fire burn more briskly when logs are added?"

- WND, Vol. I, page 33)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, the Daishonin cites a commentary by Fu Ta-shih[1] of China: 'Morning after morning we rise up with the Buddha, evening after evening we lie down with the Buddha. Moment by moment we attain the way, moment by moment we reveal our true identity' (OTT, 83).

"'Casting off the transient and revealing the true' means striving in faith based on the spirit of 'true cause,' of continuously setting forth from the present moment. It means taking action right now. When we do that, we will be filled with the great life force of time without beginning. Every moment, the Buddhism of the sun, illuminating the darkness of the Latter Day of the Law, will rise brilliantly in our lives.

"Let's make further great strides forwards from today—bringing the sun of human revolution to shine and actively tapping the infinite potential of ourselves and others!

SGI Newsletter No. 9383, The Buddhism of the Sun —Illuminating the World, (5) The Persecution of Tatsunokuchi, Let's Make Further Great Strides Forwards from Today, from the September 2015 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translation released 15th April, 2016

[1] Fu Ta-shih (497–569): A lay Buddhist in China who won the respect of Emperor Wu of the Liang dynasty, himself a devout Buddhist. He was not only an earnest practitioner of Buddhism, but also a great philanthropist. He built Shuang-lin-ssu temple and a sutra repository on the premises to house the entire collection of Buddhist scriptures. The repository was unique in that it had a revolving stand with eight faces for storing the scriptures. This style of sutra library was later adopted by many temples.
