---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The purpose of one's advent, or appearance, is the true and ultimate purpose for which one has been born or appeared in this world. In the 'Expedient Means' (2nd) chapter of the Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni states: 'The Buddhas, the World-Honoured Ones, appear in the world for one great reason alone' (LSOC2, 64). That one great reason why Buddhas make their appearance in the world is to teach the Lotus Sutra, thereby revealing that all living beings inherently possess the Buddha wisdom and establishing the path by which all people can attain the life state of Buddhahood.[1]

"For all Buddhas, the purpose of their advent is to achieve the great objective of leading everyone without exception to enlightenment. The only way they can do this is by preaching the Lotus Sutra, which teaches that Buddhahood can be attained by all.

"Those who teach and spread the correct teaching without begrudging their lives, who never flinch in the face of persecution, who make the wish of the Buddhas their own, are true votaries, or genuine practitioners, of the Lotus Sutra."

SGI Newsletter No. 9394, The Buddhism of the Sun—Illuminating the World, [6] "On Persecutions Befalling the Sage"—Part 1 [of 2], The Buddha's Aim Is the Happiness of All People, from the October 2015 issue of the Daibyaku-renge, translation released 17th May, 2016

[1] A fuller passage from the Lotus Sutra states: "The Buddhas, the World-Honoured Ones, wish to open the door of Buddha wisdom to all living beings, to allow them to attain purity. That is why they appear in the world. They wish to show the Buddha wisdom to living beings, and therefore they appear in the world. They wish to cause living beings to awaken to the Buddha wisdom, and therefore they appear in the world. They wish to induce living beings to enter the path of Buddha wisdom, and therefore they appear in the world. Shariputra, this is the one great reason for which the Buddhas appear in the world" (LSOC2, 64). This passage reveals the four aspects of Buddha wisdom—opening, showing, awakening, and helping people enter the path of Buddha wisdom.
