But in the view of Nichiren and his followers, the realisation and understanding of the concept of attainment of Buddhahood in one's present form is what is meant by "the Thus Come One's secret and his transcendental powers." For outside of the attainment of Buddhahood, there is no "secret" and no "transcendental powers."  The eternally endowed three bodies mentioned here are gained through a single word. And that single word is "faith" or "to believe." Therefore the sutra says, "We will believe and accept the Buddha's words" (chapter sixteen). You should stop and consider the meaning of these two words "believe" and "accept."

"'When your deceased husband chanted Nam-myoho-renge-kyo at the end on his deathbed, the evil deeds of a lifetime and from the beginningless past, changed into the seeds of Buddhahood. This is what is meant by the teachings called "earthly desires are enlightenment," "the sufferings of birth and death are nirvana" and "attaining Buddhahood in one's present form.

"'And because you are the beloved wife of such a man, the teaching of women attaining Buddhahood without doubt also applies to you.

"Nichiren Daishonin sent this encouragement to a disciple [the lay nun Myoho) who was recently widowed. He praises the triumphant life of her late husband, who had remained steadfast in his faith until the very end, and indicates that the surviving family members of such individuals will also obtain Buddhahood.

"The Mystic Law enables us to transform any negative karma into the 'Seeds of Buddhahood.' Therefore, no matter what happens, there is no need for us to be perturbed or daunted.

"In one of his letters, Nichiren Daishonin commends a disciple who had shown dedicated faith in a time of social turmoil, when people were undergoing great suffering and distress. He writes: 'Surely you are sowing good seeds in a field of fortune. My tears never cease to flow when I think of it [your sincere devotion]' (WND-1, 1134).

"I take these words as praise for all our noble members who have persevered with unwavering dedication to kosen-rufu in what has been a challenging year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Nichiren Daishonin, the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law, is fully aware of everything we are going through. In a letter to Shijo Kingo, who was facing a series of hardships, he states: 'If you should fall into hell for some grave offence, no matter how Shakyamuni Buddha might urge me to become a Buddha, I would refuse; I would rather go to hell with you. For if you and I should fall into hell together, we would find Shakyamuni Buddha and the Lotus Sutra there' (WND-1, 850). Have no fear, the Daishonin assures Shijo Kingo, telling him that he will accompany him if he falls into hell. Even hell can be transformed into a Land of Tranquil Light, he says.

"We are always advancing together with the Daishonin, the Mystic Law, and all Buddhas and heavenly deities throughout the universe. Is there any source of hope more powerful, profound, and all-encompassing?"

"All of our efforts for kosen-rufu create good causes that produce benefit in our lives and ensure that our families will flourish for generations to come. Nothing is ever wasted.

"Therefore, let's start each day with morning gongyo and chant specifically about our goals for the day ahead. Nichiren Buddhism teaches that the thoughts and prayers we cherish right now can set in motion waves of hope and victory that extend to our own human revolution, the health and happiness of our family, our fellow members and friends and the peace and security of our communities and the lands in which we live.

"The Bodhisattvas of the Earth voluntarily appear in the corrupt age of the Latter Day of the Law, based on their vow. They are committed to overcoming any obstacle, no matter the circumstances, opening the way for kosen-rufu and leading all people to happiness and the world to peace.

"Demonstrating their true strengths as the Bodhisattvas of the Earth, the mentors and disciples of Soka have taken on daunting challenges and steadfastly created value."

"When we take as our own the Buddha's great vow to enable all living beings to attain enlightenment, the wisdom and power of the life state of Buddhahood wells forth within us.

"The Bodhisattvas of the Earth, in particular, make a resolute and unperturbed vow, even after hearing the Buddha describe the six difficult and nine easy acts* and the three powerful enemies,** illustrations of how incredibly difficult it is to propagate the correct teaching in the Latter Day of the Law."

* Six difficult and nine easy acts: comparisons expanded in the "Emergence of the Treasure Tower" (11th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra to teach people how difficult it would be to embrace and propagate the sutra in the Latter Day of the Law. The six difficult acts are to propagate the Lotus Sutra widely, to copy it or cause someone else to copy it, to recite it  even for a short while, to teach it even to one person, to hear of and accept the Lotus Sutra and inquire about its meaning and to maintain faith in it. The nine easy acts include such feats as teaching innumerable sutras other than the Lotus Sutra, walking across a burning prairie carrying a bundle of hay on one's back without being burned and kicking a major world system into a different quarter.

** The three powerful enemies: Three types of arrogant people who persecute those who propagate the Lotus Sutra in the evil age after Shakyamuni Buddha's death, described in the concluding verse section of the "Encouraging Devotion" (13th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra. The great teacher Miao-lo of China summarises them as arrogant lay people, arrogant priests and arrogant false sages.

"Nichiren Daishonin clarified three key points in ensuring that the heritage of the ultimate Law of life and death continues to flow in the community of practitioners.

"First is unshakable conviction in faith that the Buddha, the Mystic Law, and we ordinary human beings 'are in no way different or separate from one another' (WND- 1, 216).

"Second is steadfast faith that never 'forsakes the Lotus Sutra in any lifetime whatsoever throughout eternity' (cf. WND-1, 217).

"And third is advancing with united faith towards realising the great vow for kosen-rufu as fellow practitioners one in purpose, 'transcending all differences among themselves to become as inseparable as fish and the water in which they swim' (WND-1, 217).

"Our Soka Gakkai districts have been built based on these essential points of faith. Therefore, the heritage of the ultimate Law of life and death brims vibrantly throughout them. Our districts are absolute safe places imbued with the noble virtues of eternity, joy, true self and purity, where members can encourage and support one another and strive together on their journey across the sea of the sufferings of birth, ageing, sickness and death to attain Buddhahood in this lifetime."

 warm words of encouragement 

   to help them challenge those hardships!

  "Even a feeble person will not stumble 

    if those supporting him are strong."*
Let's make the bonds between us

"Since the Lotus Sutra defines our body as the Dharma body of a Thus Come One [a Buddha], our mind as the reward body of a Thus Come One, and our actions as the manifested body of a Thus Come One, all who uphold and believe in even a single phrase or verse of this sutra will be endowed with the benefits of these three bodies.*

— From 'The One Essential Phrase" (WND–1, 922).

"The Mystic Law is the fundamental Law pervading all life and the universe. Those who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and engage in spreading the Mystic Law are Buddhas eternally endowed with the three bodies. Each can manifest, just as they are, the body, mind and actions of a Buddha, says the Daishonin.

"Those who dedicate their lives to kosen-rufu must never denigrate themselves, nor disrespect their fellow members.

"Proudly upholding the Mystic Law, let's continue to forge ahead freely, harmoniously and cheerfully, as we strive to make our daily lives and society brim with the great life force of Buddhahood."

* The three bodies of the Buddha refer to the Dharma body, the reward body and the manifested body. The Dharma body is the fundamental truth, or Law, to which the Buddha is enlightened. The reward body is the wisdom to perceive the Law. And the manifested body is the compassionate actions the Buddha carries out to lead people to happiness.
