"A magnificent building needs unshakable pillars.
"An ever-growing number of capable Soka Gakkai members, Bodhisattvas of the Earth, are taking their places in society to build a splendid future for humanity. With the great philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism forming the central pillar of their lives, they are serving as admirable pillars of their communities and societies.
"Nichiren Daishonin stood up as a towering 'pillar of Japan' (WND-1, 280)—or rather, a pillar of the whole world. He remained unperturbed even during the life-threatening trial of the Tatsunokuchi Persecution, calmly declaring: 'Now I, Nichiren, am the foremost votary of the Lotus Sutra in all of Japan, and am entirely without guilt [free of any wrongdoing]' (WND-1, 766–67).
"The soldiers there were stunned by his dauntless spirit, which caused them to question their previous assumptions about him. Their attitude changed, and in the end, they became very respectful towards him.
"In a letter to the Ikegami brothers, our predecessors here in Tokyo, the Daishonin urged them to emulate his example, saying: 'Be as fearless as Nichiren' (WND-1, 498).
"The Soka Gakkai is the heir to this spirit of invincible courage. The pillar of Soka, grounded in solid conviction, remains unshaken amid the ever-changing winds of worldly praise and criticism. We continue to speak out boldly for what is right. That is why we are able to change the hearts of those around us."
