--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"What can we say, then, of persons who are devoting themselves to Buddhism? Surely they should not forget the debts of gratitude they owe to their parents, their teachers, and their country.  But if one intends to repay these great debts of gratitude, one can hope to do so only if one learns and masters Buddhism, becoming a person of wisdom."

(On Repaying Debts of Gratitude - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol. I, page 690)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"To attain Buddhahood in one's present form, one must dispel the fundamental darkness or ignorance[1] that obscures the potential for Buddhahood. The key is to 'make even greater efforts in faith' (cf. WND-1, 457).

"The struggle between the Buddha and devilish functions within our own lives is not an easy one to win. To beat devilish functions, we have to make unceasing efforts to chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and teach others to do the same, and to strengthen and deepen our faith.

"The Daishonin uses the metaphor of 'bluer than indigo itself'[2] to describe the process of deepening our faith.

"Striving and exerting ourselves in our Buddhist practice day after day to realise our wishes and goals strengthens our prayers and deepens our faith. Reading the Gosho does the same. By reading the Gosho again and again in the midst of our struggles, we engrave in our lives the Daishonin's courageous and just actions, his boundless compassion for his disciples, and, above all, his passionate commitment to propagating the Mystic Law. In this way, we imbue, or 'dye,' our lives with Buddhahood. As the Daishonin assures us in another letter: 'Those who are imbued with the Lotus Sutra [Nam-myoho-renge-kyo] will invariably become Buddhas'" (WND-2, 675; "Snow and Lacquer").

SGI Newsletter No. 9634, The Buddhism of the Sun—Illuminating the World, [19] Faith, Practice, and Study: The Basics of Nichiren Buddhism—Part 3 [of 3], The Buddhist Study of the Soka Gakkai: Elevating People's Life State, translation released 15th June, 2017, from the November 2016 issue of the Daibyakurenge.

[1] Fundamental darkness or ignorance: The most deeply rooted illusion inherent in life, said to give rise to all other illusions. The inability to see or recognise the truth, particularly, the true nature of one's life.

[2] The simile "becoming bluer than the indigo" derives from a writing of the Chinese philosopher Hsün Tzu. The juice extracted from the indigo plant is used as a dye. Although the juice is not a deep blue colour itself, cloth dipped in it is dyed blue, with repeated dyeing producing ever deeper shades. As such, the simile refers to deepening one's learning through study.
