[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 18th-24th Sep., 2017 Words of the Week, 18th Sep. Daily Gosho + 19th Sep. Daily Encouragement

A translation of "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shinbun based on President Ikeda's recent guidance, and more.

September 18th-24th, 2017
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
To those who are about to take
an SGI Buddhist study exam,
let's be sure to warmly
and wholeheartedly encourage them!
The Daishonin encourages us,
"You must not only persevere yourself;
you must also teach others."*
Together, let's endeavour in the two ways
of practice and study!

*"Exert yourself in the two ways of practice and study. Without practice and study, there can be no Buddhism. You must not only persevere yourself; you must also teach others. Both practice and study arise from faith. Teach others to the best of your ability, even if it is only a single sentence or phrase."
- "The True Aspect of All
Phenomena", WND-I, page 386

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"The 'Expedient Means' chapter in volume one of the Lotus Sutra states, 'The wisdom of the Buddhas is infinitely profound and immeasurable.' A commentary says that the riverbed of reality is described as 'infinitely profound' because it is boundless, and that the water of wisdom is described as 'immeasurable' because it is hard to fathom."

- WND, Vol. 1, page 746)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"I am happy to see the members of various local community groups within our organisation—uniting with the group, district, and chapter leaders whose proud responsibility is to work for everyone's happiness—shining as beacons of bright hope in their precious communities.

"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'Think of a small tree under a large one, or grass by a great river. Though they do not receive rain or water directly, they nonetheless thrive, partaking of dew from the large tree or drawing moisture from the river' (WND-1, 848).

"Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo for the happiness of themselves and others, SGI members are like great trees of happiness in their families, workplaces, and communities. All those connected to them, whether they practise Nichiren Buddhism or not, will come to share in the happiness and fortune that flows forth from faith in the Mystic Law."
