"The Daishonin describes the object of devotion, or Gohonzon, as the 'banner of propagation of the Lotus Sutra' (WND-1, 831). Originally, a banner was something used in battle to identify the troops who were fighting. The Daishonin, however, uses it here to mean the banner of the spiritual struggle of kosen-rufu, of the 'propagation of the Lotus Sutra,' in the never ending battle between the Buddha and devilish functions.
"The fundamental purpose of kosen-rufu is for each person to win in life and attain a state of genuine happiness and fulfilment. The Gohonzon is the banner of our effort to achieve that great ideal."
