"When we share the Mystic Law with even one person, we are the 'envoys of the Buddha,' he says, individuals tasked with the important mission of carrying out the Buddha's compassionate work."

"Nam-myoho-renge-kyo contains the benefits accumulated through the countless practices and meritorious deeds of all Buddhas; it can lead people to enlightenment and create a Land of Tranquil Light.

"The lives of those who strive to spread the Mystic Law as Bodhisattvas of the Earth become one with the realm of Buddhahood in the universe and can bring forth boundless and immeasurable power.

"My mentor, Josei Toda, encouraged members, saying: 'Sweep away all obstacles with vigourous daimoku!' Powerfully chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the wondrous sound of renewal for which all the world yearns, lets courageously carry out actions of great good."

"The author Sohachi Yamaoka (1907-78) depicted the life of the heroic figure Mori Motonari (1497-1571), who unified the Chugoku region* during Japan's Warring States period (1467-1615). There are many famous stories about Motonari, who died 450 years ago this year.

"A monument connected to the Mori clan stands in Akitakata City, Hiroshima Prefecture, engraved with the characters hyakuman isshin, or '1000,000 hearts united as one.' The characters are engraved in a distinctive way, so that they can also be read 'one day, one strength, one heart' – meaning, in other words, that anything can be accomplished if we unite our timing, strength and mind.

"In Yamaoka's novel, Mori Motonari says: '"100,000 hearts united as one" is unity in space. But unity in space is not enough to achieve a goal. Unity through time, indifferent to length, is also essential, a hundred generations united as one heart. Without that as well, nothing important can be achieved.'**

"In the Soka Gakkai, we have 'unity in space' in the form of the spirit of 'many in body, one in mind,' but we also have the great vow of mentor and disciple carried on by the first three Soka Gakkai presidents, directly connected to Nichiren Daishonin and also shared by all Soka Gakkai members. This is 'unity through time, indifferent to length' persisting into the eternal future of the Latter Day of the Law. That is what makes us strong."

"In some areas, old customs run deep, and there may be considerable misunderstanding and prejudice towards the Soka Gakkai. I know how challenging it can be.

"But if, for this reason, you resign yourselves to thinking it inevitable that kosen-rufu will progress slowly, you won't reveal your true strength. Such an attitude will become the fundamental cause for defeat. Your struggle starts from vanquishing what could be called this 'one evil' of resignation."

"There will doubtless be days when blizzards rage along the way. The Daishonin says: 'The greater the hardships befalling him [the votary of the Lotus Sutra], the greater the delight he feels, because of his strong faith' (WND–1, 33). Facing great difficulties is a test of faith. The Daishonin also says: 'Without tribulation there would be no votary of the Lotus Sutra' (WND–1, 33). Those who walk the path of justice are destined to battle great obstacles. Never let that intimidate you."

Even if there is nothing to smile about, smile.'** We may dislike some of the people we encounter, but the Daishonin instructs us to use our wisdom, urging us to be open and accepting and to greet them with a smile."

** In yesterday's gosho quote the statue of Shakyamuni was attributed to "Nichiren-nyo," it should have read "Nichigen-nyo." Siri knows Nichiren but not Nichigen but she's learning! - she caught us out at the last moment with a final spell check!

"In November this year, the long-awaited revised edition of the Nichiren Daishonin Gosho Zenshu (Collected Writings of Nichiren Daishonin) will be published in Japanese. An additional 32 writings are included for the first time, and additional passages have been added to some previously published writings [as a result of new research findings].

"Among them is a profoundly meaningful addition to "On Clothing and Food," which the Daishonin sent to a woman disciple. [SGI Newsletter Editors' Note: The new portion is already included in the translation of this writing in volume 2 of The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin.] It reads:

"'When one lights a torch for someone at night, one brings light not only to another person but to oneself as well. Likewise, when one livens other people's complexions, one livens one's own too, when one gives them strength, one gives oneself strength too, when one prolongs their lives, one prolongs one's own life as well. (WND–2, 1066)

"When we light the way for others and brighten our communities, we illuminate our own way; when we encourage and energise others, we, too, are encouraged, inspired and invigorated the Daishonin says."
