"It is essential that we 'uphold the character myo' with the conviction that we each possess the supremely respectworthy life state of Buddhahood. 'Uphold' here means to maintain steadfast faith until the very end.

"Stead fast" means making a new determination each day, challenging ourselves each day and advancing, growing and triumphing each day."

"'The Venerable Maudgalyayana [one of the Buddha's 10 major disciples] put his faith in the Lotus Sutra, which is the greatest good there is, and thus not only did he himself attain Buddhahood, but his father and mother did so as well. And, amazing as it may seem, all the fathers and mothers of the preceding seven generations and the seven generations that followed, indeed, of countless lifetimes before and after, were able to become Buddhas.'

"The power of the Mystic Law transcends time and space. The brilliant light of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo reaches our deceased loved ones, relieving their suffering and imparting joy, and guides them unfailingly towards Buddhahood. "Myo is also described as the wish-granting jewel meaning that we can bring forth immeasurable treasure at will. The benefits enjoyed by those who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and remain steadfast in faith is truly immense. This is something we come to appreciate over time, because the true benefit of faith in the Mystic Law is inconspicuous.

"A sapling puts down solid roots in the earth, growing gradually over time into a mighty tree that is unbowed by raging winds or storms. Similarly, through steadfast faith in the Mystic Law, we each gradually come to blossom splendidly, in our own unique way, producing branches of good fortune and benefit and causing wonderful flowers of happiness to bloom for ourselves and others.

"Mr. Toda also described inconspicuous benefit as attaining a state of absolute happiness. That means to gain a vast and boundless state in which being alive itself is a joy."

encourages us to rejoice,
"(Even if you are not 

the Venerable Mahākāshyapa,)
you should all perform a dance."*
This spirit of dancing with joy 

is the very driving force
for the expansion of our 

kosen-rufu movement.
The more difficult our situation might be,
the more passionately we burn 

to challenge ourselves!

*Mahākāshyapa and Shāriputra danced with joy in the Lotus Sutra (Simile and Parable chapter) when they heard the Buddha's teaching of universal enlightenment, and realised that they, too, could become Buddhas.

"'If you recite these words of the daimoku [Nam-myoho-renge-kyo] once, then the Buddha nature of all living beings will be summoned and gather around you. At that time the three bodies of the Dharma nature within you—the Dharma body, the reward body and the manifested body*— will be drawn forth and become manifest. This is called attaining Buddhahood.'

 

- From 'Conversation between a Sage and an Unenlightened Man' (WND–1, 131).

"Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo has the great beneficial power to summon the Buddha nature of all living beings. We are, therefore, also certain to be safeguarded by the Buddhas and protective functions throughout the universe.

"Even if we chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo only once for someone who is struggling with illness or other hardships—be it a loved one, fellow member or friend—it will touch that person's life without fail. And as a result, we also gain the benefit of increasing our own life force.

"Engaging in dialogue, based on daimoku, to realise the Daishonin's ideal of 'establishing the correct teaching for the peace of the land' is a noble endeavour. It not only activates the Buddha nature in our own and others' lives, but also brings good fortune to pervade the lands in which we dwell."

To all of my dear proud fellow 

Bodhisattvas of the Earth,
selflessly devoting themselves 

with the power of the lion's ferocity*
"for the sake of the nation, 

for the sake of the Law, 

for the sake of others,"**
it is most definite that 

all Buddhas and Buddhist gods 

(the protective forces 

of the universe)
will support our actions.
Striving wholeheartedly together,
let's challenge ourselves 

to the fullest 

to the very last moment

without any regrets,
and let's win a victory 

for both kosen-rufu and our own lives!

"'What is the correct way to live?' I asked my future mentor, Josei Toda, at the discussion meeting where I met him for the first time on August 14th, 1947, when I was 19 years old.

"His answer was clear and straightforward. He told me to try practising Nichiren Buddhism. If I did, he said, I would naturally find myself following the correct path through life.

"Just as birds follow the path of birds in the sky and fish follow the path of fish in the sea, we also follow a path that leads to genuine happiness in life. This is the path of Nichiren Buddhism, the path of kosen-rufu and establishing the correct teaching for the peace of the land – in other words, the path of creating world peace."

"Nichiren Daishonin asserts that the Buddha nature that all living beings possess—all the Buddhas and bodhisattvas of the universe, as well as the gods of the sun, moon and morning star, and even the dwellers of the lowest depths of hell —'is called by the name Myoho-renge-kyo' (cf.WND–1, 131). Therefore, if you chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo even once, he says, 'the Buddha nature of all living beings will be summoned and gather around you,'  and your own Buddha nature will also 'be drawn forth and become manifest' (cf.WND-1, 131).

"Nothing is as vast and powerful as the lives of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and teach others to do the same. Our movement for kosen-rufu is a grand endeavour—encompassing heaven, earth and all living things—to unlock and unite the Buddha nature, the innate positive power, of people who have been racked by despair and misery, divided by mistrust and conflict."

** Fundamental ignorance: Also, fundamental darkness. The most deeply rooted illusion inherent in life, said to give rise to all other illusions. The inability to see or recognise the ultimate truth of the Mystic Law, as well as the negative impulses that arise from such ignorance.
