"The purpose of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism is to establish the correct teaching for the peace of the land. It is to establish the ideals of respect for the sanctity of life and human dignity and, based thereon, realise happiness for all people and the flourishing of peaceful societies.
"The Buddha wishes to lead all living beings in the direction of supreme good and help them attain the same indestructible state of absolute happiness that he has achieved. This profound wish is elucidated with great directness and clarity in the Lotus Sutra. To embrace and uphold this sutra means to take action with this same spirit as the Buddha brimming vibrantly in one's life. In contrast, to slander the Lotus Sutra represents a repudiation of the Buddha's wish to lead all people to enlightenment. Such behaviour is influenced by negative workings inherent in life--or 'evil demons'--that seek to destroy people's innate goodness and ultimately their happiness. Such slander sullies people's lives and intensifies deluded impulses and desires, making them selfishly concerned with the pursuit of personal fame, fortune, and position. This in turn gives rise to a general climate where no one has the slightest qualm in sacrificing others' happiness for their own. In a society where humanity is lacking and disrespect for life prevails, there will not only be internal disorder and strife, but unceasing conflict with other societies.
"This insight is succinctly encapsulated in various sutra passages warning that slander of the Law is the fundamental cause of all calamities and, if left unremedied, will lead to war, and inevitably, the destruction of the nation."
