"In the Daishonin's Buddhism, action is key. In an early Buddhist text, we find these immortal words of Shakyamuni: 'Not by birth does one become an outcaste, not by birth does one become a brahman. By (one's) action one becomes an outcaste, by (one's) action one becomes a brahman.' This statement that people are defined not by the circumstances of their birth but by their actions is a declaration of human equality that shines with undimmed brilliance in the present age.
"The Daishonin personally achieved the great undertaking that Bodhisattva Superior Practices had been destined to carry out. He encountered many challenging obstacles and persecutions along the way, just as the Lotus Sutra predicted. Given that his efforts validate the sutra's assertions, the Daishonin declares that he surely 'must equal the sages T'ien-t'ai and Dengyo' (WND-1, 672). He proclaims that his own struggles are themselves equivalent to the struggles of genuine sages. In other words, he wanted to show us, ordinary people of the Latter Day, that when awakened individuals stand up with a personal commitment to fulfil their true mission, they can actualise the immeasurably great and noble goal of enabling all people to attain Buddhahood."
