---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The French historian Jules Michelet (1798-1874) keenly observed: 'When the home is shaken, everything is shaken.' Even if we talk about peace and happiness, if we ignore the family, it will only be empty words.

"The Soka Gakkai has continued to focus on the real-life challenges of the 'human revolution' of each individual and the "family revolution' of each family. These efforts may be arduous and painstaking, but they are precisely why our membership is so solid and unshakable.

"...The Great Teacher Dengyo of Japan states: 'When, in the family, honour is paid diligently to the teachings [of the Lotus Sutra], the seven disasters will most certainly be banished' (WND-2, 1026). How important it is therefore that the sound of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo comes to resound in more and more homes and the philosophy of the sanctity of life becomes more widely established in our communities.

"Where there is a network of people who encourage, protect, and support one another, safe havens of hope that are undefeated by disasters will spread throughout society. And this will lead to the construction of a peaceful and prosperous society based on the life-affirming principles of Buddhism and soundly grounded in the family and the community.

"...There's no need to be impatient or in a hurry. When I first joined the Soka Gakkai, my father disapproved of my practice. I remember my mother went through great pains to mediate between us.

"The Daishonin writes: 'When ordinary people in the latter age hear this doctrine [of the Lotus Sutra], not only will they themselves attain Buddhahood, but also their fathers and mothers will attain Buddhahood in their present forms. This is the highest expression of filial devotion' (WND-2, 744).

"It's important to start with your own human revolution and make your inner Buddhahood shine forth. It's also vital to cherish your family. By showing that you have grown, you will reassure your parents. The Daishonin states: 'Nothing is more certain than actual proof' (WND-1, 478), and 'Even more valuable than reason and documentary proof is the proof of actual fact' (WND-1, 599)."
