"Sixty years ago (in 1951), I experienced a New Year's of bitter adversity as bleak as a winter blizzard. My mentor's business situation was going from bad to worse. We were facing our direst crisis yet. I alone stood by Mr. Toda at that time, doing everything I could to support and assist him. I refused to give in to despair or be defeated by the hardships that confronted me. I made a fresh resolve to fight, and when I did so, the light of dawn began to glimmer in my heart. I wrote in my diary at the time:

"Because I have faith,
amid the ugly struggle for survival,
I can stride, maintaining purity,
through a victorious life.
.................................
"Because I have faith,
even in a society filled with contradictions and irrationality,
I can advance boldly, confident in the law of cause and effect."
