---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"What is the ultimate power that enables us to overcome hardships and experience dynamic development in our lives? In a letter to Nichimyo, the mother of Oto Gozen, the Daishonin writes: 'I know your faith has always been admirable, but now you must strengthen it more than ever' (WND-1, 614). Three years earlier, Nichimyo had made the long and perilous journey from Kamakura to visit the Daishonin at his place of exile in Sado, bringing her young daughter with her. At that time, the Daishonin praised her courageous efforts, saying: 'You are the foremost votary of the Lotus Sutra among the women of Japan' (WND-1, 325). Nevertheless, he stresses that she must strengthen her faith 'more than ever.' Such is the rigorous path of mentor and disciple. The Daishonin gives this strict guidance because the more we strengthen our faith, the stronger will be the protection of the heavenly deities--the benevolent functions of the universe.
"In the same letter to Nichimyo, he writes:
"You need not seek far for an example. Everyone in Japan, from the sovereign on down to the common people, without exception has tried to do me harm, but I have survived until this day. You should realise that this is because, although I am alone, I have firm faith. (WND-1, 614)
"The Daishonin was maligned and attacked by people throughout the land, and his life was in constant danger. Although he was alone, he triumphed completely over the avalanche of persecutions that descended upon him. He was able to do so, he says, because of his 'firm faith.' His words are a call to his disciples to follow his example and strive with the same spirit."
