--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"It must be ties of karma from the distant past that have destined you
to become my disciple at a time like this. Shakyamuni and Many
Treasures certainly realised this truth. The sutra's statement, 'Those
persons who had heard the Law dwelled here and there in various Buddha
lands, constantly reborn in company with their teachers,' cannot be
false in any way."

Daishonin, Vol.1, page 217)

—— DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, Nichiren Daishonin discusses the term 'lion's roar'[1] (Jpn. shishi ku), explaining:

"The first shi [which means "teacher"] of the word shishi, or "lion," is the Wonderful Law that is passed on by the teacher. The second shi [which means "child"] is the Wonderful Law as it is received by the disciples. The "roar" (ku) [of the lion] is the sound of the teacher and the disciples chanting in unison. (cf. OTT, 111)

"In other words, the ultimate "lion's roar" is the sound of mentor and disciple chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with a shared vow for kosen-rufu. There is no sound more strong and true, more profound and sublime, in all the world.

"…For all of us, life is a struggle against the fundamental sufferings of birth, ageing, sickness, and death. But the Daishonin assures us: 'Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is like the roar of a lion. What sickness can therefore be an obstacle?' (WND-1, 412). Nothing surpasses the 'lion's roar' of daimoku.

"My youthful disciples, whose hearts are one with mine, please never allow yourselves to be defeated. Illnesses and problems exist so that we can overcome them, so that we can attain Buddhahood. They are trials that arise so that we can resolutely surmount them and thereby encourage and help many others who are suffering."
