-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The happiness of our friends
and the growth of our fellow members,
both depend on our own firm inner resolve and determination.
By chanting strong daimoku and
putting our faith into action,
let's build a solidarity of human revolution!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"And yet, though one might point at the earth and miss it, though one
might bind up the sky, though the tides might cease to ebb and flow and
the sun rise in the west, it could never come about that the prayers of
the practitioner of the Lotus Sutra would go unanswered."

(On Prayer, The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol 1, Page 345)

—— DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Nichiren Daishonin offered the following encouragement to the Ikegami brothers, Munenaka and Munenaga, who were in the midst of a struggle against serious obstacles: 'The blessings gained by practicing the correct teaching [the Mystic Law], however, are so great that by meeting minor sufferings in this life we can change the karma that destines us to suffer terribly in the future' (WND-1, 497).

"Through 'the blessings gained by practising the correct teaching'—that is, 'the blessings obtained by protecting the Law,'[1] the grave negative effects of karma that we would otherwise have experienced in the future are transformed and received as minor effects in the present. We need to be deeply convinced of this principle, called 'lessening karmic retribution.'[2] And, to a degree that accords with the depth of our faith, we can experience its reality in our own lives.

"For instance, suppose you meet with an accident, but it is very minor and not a disaster that involves many people. This could be an instance of receiving the effects of negative karma in a lessened form. You can probably think of many similar examples.

"In this way, we can clearly see the significance of hardships from the perspective of the eternity of life across the three existences of past, present, and future. In other words, by undergoing hardships, we can transform in this lifetime the cycle of negative causes and effects in our lives and magnificently reveal within us the brilliant, vibrant state of Buddhahood."

SGI Newsletter No. 9095, The Wisdom for Creating Happiness and Peace, Part 1: Happiness, Chap. 4: Transforming Suffering into Joy—Part 3 [of 3], 4.6 Both Suffering and Joy Are a Part of Life, from the September 2014 issue of the Daibyaku-renge, translation released 25th Sep., 2014

[1] The Nirvana Sutra says: "They may be poorly clad and poorly fed, seek wealth in vain, be born to an impoverished and lowly family or one with erroneous views, or be persecuted by their sovereign. They may be subjected to various other sufferings and retributions. It is due to the blessings obtained by protecting the Law that they can diminish in this lifetime their suffering and retribution" (WND-1, 497).
[2] Lessening karmic retribution: This term, which literally means, "transforming the heavy and receiving it lightly," appears in the Nirvana Sutra. "Heavy" indicates negative karma accumulated over countless lifetimes in the past. As a benefit of protecting the correct teaching of Buddhism, we can experience relatively light karmic retribution in this lifetime, thereby expiating heavy karma that ordinarily would adversely affect us not only in this lifetime, but over many lifetimes to come.
