"Speaking of the attitude we should adopt in studying the Gosho, Mr. Toda once said:
"'You should be aware that all of Nichiren Daishonin's[1] writings are based on faith [in the Mystic Law]. . . . You should realise that unless you grasp the fact that the Daishonin's passionate spirit and his profound confidence of leading all people to enlightenment form the basis of his writings, your efforts in studying the Gosho will be meaningless.'
"It is vital to study with absolute faith and take action for kosen-rufu in accord with the Daishonin's great confidence of leading all people to enlightenment. When we study the Gosho with this kind of faith and practice, Mr. Toda said, 'We cannot help but feel the flame of faith blaze up still higher in our hearts '[1] That flame creates the light that enables us to change despair into hope and transform karma into mission.

"In his letters, the Daishonin wholeheartedly encouraged his disciples, who were dealing with a wide range of problems and challenges. That's why it's important to apply the Gosho to our own lives as we study. We should regard the Daishonin's writings as personal letters to us, and put his teachings into practise in our lives.
"A certain men's division member in Singapore was involved in a traffic accident that left him paralysed from the waist down. He was also later afflicted with tuberculosis and then suffered bad burns to his leg.As he battled one onslaught of karma after another, he said he gained immense strength from the following Gosho passage: 'The three obstacles and four devils will invariably appear, and the wise will rejoice while the foolish will retreat' (WND-1, 637).
"This wise men's division member realised that his difficulties were testing his faith, and today, taking pride in his mission to demonstrate the power of Nichiren Buddhism in his own life, he is positively advancing along the path of creating happiness for oneself and others.
"Those who have engraved the Daishonin's writings in their hearts are strong. They establish a solid pillar in their lives that will not be shaken by any storm. They can see obstacles and devilish functions for what they are and cut through them. They possess the sharp sword of faith that has been polished by diligent, devoted study."
