A translation of President Ikeda's "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shinbun and more January 19th-25th, 2015 -- WORDS OF THE WEEK -- It's through visiting our fellow members and offering them personal guidance that they are truly encouraged to make great leaps forward in their lives. "One is the mother of ten thousand."* Let's offer words of warm and caring encouragement to each person whom we have a chance to talk with. Let's help to raise as many talented and capable people as we can by making a personal "hand-crafted" effort in every possible way! *"The popular proverb says that 'one is the mother of ten thousand.'"- "Conversation between a Sage and an Unenlightened Man", WND-II, page 130 Monday, January 19th, 2015 --- DAILY GOSHO --- "The sun rises in the east, an auspicious sign of how the Buddhism of Japan is destined to return to the Land of the Moon. ... But the light of the sun is brilliant, outshining the moon, an auspicious sign of how the Buddhism of Japan is destined to illuminate the long darkness of [the Latter Day of the Law, which begins with] the fifth five-hundred-year period." (On Reprimanding Hachiman - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.2, page 936) Selection source: The New Human Revolution, Seikyo Shimbun, January 19th, 2015 Tuesday, January 20th, 2015 ---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ---- "In many of his writings, as a means of impressing upon his disciples the profound nature of their mission, the Daishonin describes the significance of encountering the Lotus Sutra in this lifetime and embracing and propagating the daimoku of the Lotus Sutra—Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. "For example, in "Letter to Jakunichi-bo," he writes: "'It is extremely rare to be born as a human being. Not only are you endowed with human form, but you have had the rare fortune to encounter Buddhism. Moreover, out of the Buddha's many teachings you have encountered the daimoku, or the title, of the Lotus Sutra [i.e., Nam-myoho-renge-kyo] and become its votary.' (WND-1, 993) "I am certain that many of our members who read this passage can personally attest to its truth, affirming that their encounter with the Daishonin's Buddhism has made them the person they are today, and that learning about the teachings of Nichiren Buddhism in the SGI enabled them to remain true and steadfast in their practice. "The Daishonin repeatedly stresses in his writings the importance of this present life. Buddhism teaches the eternity of life so that we can make most of this existence, this present moment. We're not meant to lead lives of resigned acceptance, fixated on our past karma, or to ignore the present and think only longingly of the future. "The purpose of our Buddhist practice is to enable us to live fully in the present. The present, this moment, exists so that we can transform the patterns of past karma and enter the loftier trajectory of cause and effect based on the Mystic Law leading to indestructible happiness."
