A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more. Wednesday, Jan 21st, 2015 -- TO MY FRIENDS -- Let's be sure to make good use of those precious words "Thank you!" A spirit of gratitude and appreciation enriches our hearts and spreads happiness all around us. Wednesday, Jan 21st, 2015 --- DAILY GOSHO --- "Arouse deep faith, and diligently polish your mirror day and night. How should you polish it? Only by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo." (On Attaining Buddhahood in This Lifetime - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 412) Selection source: Kyo no Hosshin, Seikyo Shimbun, January 21st, 2015 Thursday, Jan 22nd, 2015 ---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ---- "The true enlightenment of Buddhas is to see the supremely noble potential they discern within themselves—potential as vast and infinite as the universe—as also existing equally in the lives of all people. The true behaviour of a Buddha is to try to draw out that potential from everyone. In other words, those who continue striving to help all attain Buddhahood are genuine Buddhas. If that all-important principle is overlooked, then however people may revere a Buddha, doing so will amount to entreating the Buddha as a supernatural power, something separate from ourselves, turning Buddhism into no more than a form of begging or making wishes. "In the Daishonin's day, Buddhism, originally a teaching of the supreme dignity of all people, had degenerated into a religion that demeaned and devalued people. The Daishonin fought against such slander of the Law arising from the erroneous doctrines of the established Buddhist schools of his time. "Buddhism began as a humanistic religion, teaching that all people are Buddhas and that everyone is worthy of supreme respect. It did not teach that there is a higher realm of religion existing somewhere else, separate from us, but insisted that the Law resides within us. The ultimate expression of that principle is to be found within the Lotus Sutra. Moreover, the 'Buddhism for the people' taught by Nichiren Daishonin sets forth the way by which anyone can manifest the unsurpassed state of Buddhahood in their own lives, just as they are. "Indeed, Nichiren Buddhism is the lion's roar, silencing the multitude of 'beasts' that would denigrate human dignity; it is the sun that illuminates the darkness of ignorance obstructing human potential. The Daishonin established a teaching open and accessible to all people in the Latter Day of the Law. "The Daishonin's towering conviction shines brightly in his declaration: 'Once the invocation of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo has been raised, the Nembutsu will become like a dog cowering before a lion, or the light of the stars paling before the sun' (WND-1, 959)."
