"If a person cannot manage to cross a moat ten feet wide, how can he cross one that is a hundred or two hundred feet?"

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Our Buddhist practice does not make us immune to ageing or to illness. We may sometimes wonder why our faith doesn't shield us from such things. As we age, it is only natural that we may not be as spry and energetic as we once were. All living things are subject to the sufferings of birth, ageing, sickness, and death. Ageing, illness, and death are innate to life.

"But when we, as practitioners of the Mystic Law, view these universal sufferings from the profound perspective of the eternity of life and continue to forge ahead courageously, we can make the 'originally inherent nature of birth and death' (OTT, 127)[1] shine in our lives.

"In another letter ['The Good Medicine for All Ills'], Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'Illness gives rise to the resolve to attain the way' (WND-1, 937). Even if we should experience illness, it has deep meaning. We will definitely come to appreciate the Daishonin's words: 'Could not this illness . . . be the Buddha's design . . . ?' (WND-1, 937). Illness can be an opportunity for lessening karmic retribution, for changing poison into medicine.

"Everything in our lives is fuel for polishing our lives so that we have no regrets. Everything that happens allows us to show proof of achieving the state of eternal happiness that we call 'attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime.' We have nothing to worry about. Since we have already entered the path to future victory, our ageing, sickness, and death reveal their true intrinsic nature illuminated by the Mystic Law."

SGI Newsletter No. 9244, Learning from the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin: The Teachings for Victory, [66] "Encouragement to a Sick Person," "Illness Gives Rise to the Resolve to Attain the Way," from the September 2014 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translation released 19th May, 2015

[1] Originally inherent nature of birth and death: The true nature or reality of birth and death of all living beings, as entities one with the Mystic Law, the fundamental law of the universe. The life of an individual living being is a manifestation of this intrinsic nature, while death is its withdrawal into a latent state.
