"If votaries of the Lotus Sutra carry out religious practice as the sutra directs, then every one of them without exception will surely attain Buddhahood within his or her present lifetime. To cite an analogy, if one plants the fields in spring and summer, then, whether it be early or late, one is certain to reap a harvest within the year. Votaries of the Lotus Sutra fall into three categories, superior, middling, and inferior, depending upon their capacities, and yet all will invariably attain enlightenment within a single lifetime."

March 27th - April 2nd, 2017 
-- Words of the Week -- 
It is said, "Take the initiative, and you will win."
How speedily we take action determines our victories.
Now, towards the start of a new school/fiscal year,*
let's unleash the same kind of power 
similar to that of a lion's ferocity**
by chanting daimoku focused on specific goals
and concrete targets. 

*Japan and several other countries start a new fiscal and school year on April 1.
**"The lion king is said to advance three steps, then gather himself to spring, unleashing the same power whether he traps a tiny ant or attacks a fierce animal. In inscribing this Gohonzon for her protection, Nichiren was like the lion king. This is what the sutra means by 'the power [of the Buddhas] that has the lion's ferocity.'" - "Reply to Kyō'ō", WDN-I, page 412

"Now when Nichiren and his followers perform ceremonies for the deceased, reciting the Lotus Sutra and chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the ray of light from the daimoku reaches all the way to the hell of incessant suffering and makes it possible for them to attain Buddhahood then and there. This is the origin of the prayers for transference of merit for the deceased."

"The great beneficial power of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo will also reach our deceased loved ones. No matter how tragic their death, we can send them the bright light of the Mystic Law and guide them to Buddhahood.

"Above all, through engaging in SGI activities—chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo ourselves and for others and striving to advance kosen-rufu—our lives come to resound with a song of eternal triumph in which both life and death are suffused with joy.

"When you happen to meet children or are visiting families with children, always make an effort to speak to those young people.

"There are things that parents may have difficulty communicating to their children, but which they may readily accept when voiced by fellow members of all ages in their local Gakkai organisations.

"Members should also tell children about positive things their parents are doing, for example: 'Your dad is working hard for everyone. He's a wonderful person.' 'I spoke with your mom and she gave me some advice that really helped me.' And they should also praise the children themselves, saying, for instance: 'Thank you for taking care of things at home when your parents are busy with activities. I know they really appreciate it.' This is because warm words from fellow members of our Soka family will sparkle as precious gems in the hearts of these youngsters for as long as they live."

-- TO MY FRIENDS -- 
Ah spring is here, 
the golden season for dialogue!
While chanting for our friend's happiness
let's share Nichiren Buddhism, 
and its philosophy, with them
brimming with enthusiasm and passion!
Without sparing our voices,
let's carry out the practice 
of propagating this Buddhism
to the full extent of our abilities!*

"Those who foster capable individuals are capable individuals themselves in the truest sense.

"When we foster capable people today, we are also building a stage upon which new capable Bodhisattvas of the Earth can emerge in the future and be active.

"The Daishonin writes: 'The flower will return to the root and the essence of the plant will remain in the earth' (WND-1, 737). In accord with this principle, the benefit accumulated by courageous Bodhisattvas of the Earth who spread the Mystic Law also becomes the benefit and good fortune of those who fostered them. The rewards or positive results of nurturing the children of the Buddha are immeasurable and boundless."

-- TO MY FRIENDS -- 
As Nichiren Buddhism teaches
the principle of "cherry, plum, peach and damson,"*
there is no need to compare ourselves 
with somebody else.
Rather than trying to follow what others do 
and achieve a goal in haste,
it's more important to make an effort
to progress diligently and steadily in our own unique way!
Through striving to live true to ourselves,
let's bring to blossom 
the flowers of our own missions 
in our own lives!
 
* When one comes to realise and see that each thing – the cherry, the plum, the peach, the damson – in its own entity, without undergoing any change, possesses the eternally endowed three bodies, then this is what is meant by the word ryō, "to include" or all-inclusive.
