"This morning, as my wife and I sang the Tohoku Soka Gakkai song 'The Aoba Pledge,' which I love so well, and the 'Song of the New Century,' which originated from Tohoku,* we recalled the many unforgettable Tohoku members who have made such important contributions to our movement over the years.
"'The 'Song of the New Century' contains lines expressing the pride of carrying on the Daishonin's spirit of propagation, the dauntless conviction he articulated as: 'Like the lion king, the monarch of all the creatures that run on the ground, and like the eagle, the king of all the creatures that fly in the sky' (WND-1, 929–30). This is the eternal Soka Gakkai spirit.
"Like young eagles, like lion kings, let us strive and advance, confidently and fearlessly. Through our united efforts in the spirit of 'many in body, one in mind,' let us triumph over all obstacles as the pillars of our country, of the people, of youth, and of peace!
"I would like to bring my message to a close today with this poem:
"'Rise, sun of time without beginning!
Shine brilliantly
so that winter will give way
to the light of happiness
of spring.'
