[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 13-19 March 2017 Words of the Week, 13 March Daily Gosho + 14 March Daily Encouragement

A translation of "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shinbun based on President Ikeda's recent guidance, and more.

March 13th - 19th, 2017
-- Words of the Week --
So that we can become even bluer than indigo,*
let's strive to advance now more than ever!
This is the heart of the SGI.
By carefully looking after
our young kosen-rufu successors,
let's hold a truly dynamic and hope-filled
discussion meeting!

*In his Great Concentration and Insight, the sixth-century Chinese Buddhist teacher T'ien-t'ai used the phrase "from the indigo, an even deeper blue." This employs the example of the ancient process of dyeing cloth using a blue dye made from the indigo plant, where the dyed cloth takes on a deeper blue than the plant from which it was derived due to repeated immersion in the dye. In the same way, if the mentor is likened to the indigo plant, by absorbing the mentor's teachings, the disciple can achieve an even more splendid "blue." This illustrates that the ultimate goal of the relationship is to enable the disciple to surpass the mentor.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"And yet, though one might point at the earth and miss it, though one might bind up the sky, though the tides might cease to ebb and flow and the sun rise in the west, it could never come about that the prayers of the practitioner of the Lotus Sutra would go unanswered." (On Prayer - WND, Vol. I, page 345)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The true value of any state or society lies in what it does for those who are most afflicted by suffering, not in its military or economic prowess. "Education gives rise to the actions and activities that shape the direction of society over time. Education for global citizenship, in particular, can provide the conditioning context (relation) that enables people to reframe events, wherever they may occur, through a shared human perspective, and to foster action and solidarity. It can encourage people to consider global issues in terms of their own lives and lifestyles, thus bringing forth the inner capacities we each possess. "Through education for global citizenship, learners have the opportunity to: (1) gain the experience of seeing the world through the eyes of others; (2) discover and clarify what is necessary in order to build a society where we can all live together; and (3) collaborate to give birth to spaces of security in their immediate surroundings."
