---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Even parents who are extremely critical or who are attached to outdated ways of thinking and have little understanding of the younger generation can be motivated by an intense concern for their children and a willingness to undergo any sacrifice for their children's welfare. When children go the extra mile to try to understand their parents' hearts, they can make dramatic strides in deepening their own character and developing the ability to appreciate their parents' struggles.

"For both better and worse, life tendencies at the deepest level are often passed from parent to child. The important thing is to transform negative, harmful tendencies into positive, constructive ones that can limitlessly draw out our inherent goodness. Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism teaches that we all possess within us the power to make that transformation.

"Mr. Toda said: 'There are so many young people who are incapable of having compassion for their own parents. How can they be expected to care about perfect strangers? The effort to overcome the coldness and indifference in our own lives and attain the same state of compassion as the Buddha is the essence of human revolution.'[1] He is saying that everything hinges on whether we can overcome our coldness and indifference; we need to take responsibility for changing our own karma. Mr. Toda especially urged young people to challenge their human revolution.

"I've encouraged young people in exactly the same spirit. Being good to your parents is the first step in the Buddhist practice of treating all people with compassion."
