"Upholding the correct teaching of Buddhism, the Daishonin consistently remonstrated with the misguided rulers of his day and refuted erroneous teachings that cast the people into misery. This is the unchanging spirit of refuting the erroneous and revealing the true. However, in the present, when sovereignty rests with the people, each individual is the ruler, and the question then becomes what kind of society the people create for themselves. Is it a society that fails to value human life, a society rife with discrimination, or is it a society in which people work together to elevate their state of life? The beliefs held by the individuals who make up society are the decisive factor in how it is shaped.

"That is why practitioners of the Lotus Sutra, through their personal inner transformation, continue to make efforts to realise a society that elevates the life-condition of the people.

"To realise such a society—a humanistic society that exists for the sake of the people—we must resolutely fight against tendencies and ideas taking root in society that devalue life and humanity, speaking out forcefully for what is right and just.

"This is the fundamental tenet underlying our daily efforts as SGI members to promote dialogue. It is also the essence of our noble struggle for kosen-rufu, directly aligned with the spirit of Nichiren Daishonin."
