"In what can the Soka Gakkai take the most pride?
"At a young women's division general meeting 40 years ago (in December 1954), Mr. Toda clarified this point, saying:
There are many religious organisations in Japan. Among all of them, only the Soka Gakkai continues to carry out its religious activities with pride. What do we take pride in? The fact that we have a clear purpose. . . . Of the numerous religious organisations in Japan, none have a clear purpose. They are all only working for the benefit of their own schools, using their teachings as a way to make money. [1]
"Mr. Toda's criticism was very perceptive. He always discerned the essence of things.
"He continued:
"We of the Soka Gakkai, however, have a clear purpose. . . . Since the Daishonin made his appearance in the world, our great purpose has been kosen-rufu. . . . The Soka Gakkai has the great purpose of enabling the Japanese people to attain happiness—for the sake of the Gohonzon [the Law], for the sake of kosen-rufu in Asia, and for the sake of the entire world. . . . The Soka Gakkai, based on the world's foremost philosophy, is aiming to enable all people to attain happiness. [2]
"Our great purpose is enabling all people to attain enlightenment. That is the sole aim of the Soka Gakkai, and that is what we take pride in."
