---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The Daishonin says that the devil king of the sixth heaven attacks the forces of good with his 'ten kinds of troops' (WND-2, 465). The ten kinds of troops are listed in The Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom[1] as: (1) greed, (2) discouragement, (3) hunger and thirst, (4) craving, (5) sleepiness, (6) fear, (7) doubt and regret, (8) anger, (9) preoccupation with fame, fortune, and false glory, and (10) arrogance and contempt for others. All of these are devilish functions that arise within us.

"In Buddhism, "devils" or "devilish functions" are defined as "robbers of life" or "robbers of benefit" (cf. WND-1, 87). In other words, they drain away the life force we need to lead positive lives, and rob us of the benefit we have accumulated. The ten kinds of troops and the devil king of the sixth heaven are not actual beings. They represent the inner workings of life. In that sense, attaining Buddhahood is essentially a struggle not against external forces but against the destructive forces or negativity that reside within our own lives. The direct route to attaining Buddhahood is vanquishing this inner devilish nature.

"As such, even if we are robbed of all our possessions or suffer an illness or injury, as long as our faith remains solid and unshaken, we can stand up again, challenge our situation, triumph over it, and build true happiness. 'It is the heart that is important' (WND-1, 949; 1000). The essential nature of devilish functions is to try to destroy this all-important heart of faith."

SGI Newsletter No. 9311,  Learning from the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin: The Teachings for Victory, [70] "The Great Battle," Those with Steadfast Faith Enjoy Immeasurable Good Fortune and Benefit, from the March 2015 issue of the Daibyaku-renge, translation released 20th Oct. 2015

[1] The Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom: A comprehensive commentary on the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, traditionally attributed to Nagarjuna (c. 150–250). Only the Chinese version translated by Kumarajiva exists today. The work explains the concepts of wisdom and of non-substantiality, and the bodhisattva ideal and the six paramitas, among others. It also incorporates concepts from the Lotus Sutra and other Mahayana sutras, and is considered an extremely important work of Mahayana thought in general.
