---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"What is the most powerful weapon for defeating the ten kinds of troops? The Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom says that no one can defeat the armies of Mara (the devil king) that wage battle inside us; only the arrow of the Buddha's wisdom can do so.[1]

"What is the arrow of the Buddha's wisdom that is the only means of defeating these devilish functions? The Lotus Sutra is the ultimate teaching, crystallizing the Buddha's wisdom in words. It teaches that the life state embodying the Buddha's wisdom—that is, the life state of Buddhahood—is inherent in our lives and that we can tap and reveal it.

"In addition, based on the principle of 'substituting faith for wisdom,'[2] strong faith in the Mystic Law can also serve as the weapon for vanquishing devilish forces. Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'The single word "belief" is the sharp sword with which one confronts and overcomes fundamental darkness or ignorance'[3] (OTT, 119–20).

"Fundamental darkness or ignorance refers to the function of fundamental evil inherent in our lives. Says the Daishonin: 'Fundamental darkness manifests itself as the devil king of the sixth heaven' (WND-1, 1113). That is, fundamental darkness emerges in response to negative influences or conditions, expressing itself as the workings of the devil king of the sixth heaven. It destroys our resolve and spirit so as to hinder our Buddhist practice.

"The fundamental darkness that resides in the heart of each individual is the source of all unhappiness and misery. What can defeat it is the 'sharp sword' of faith."

SGI Newsletter No. 9311,  Learning from the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin: The Teachings for Victory, [70] "The Great Battle," Those with Steadfast Faith Enjoy Immeasurable Good Fortune and Benefit, from the March 2015 issue of the Daibyaku-renge, translation released 20th Oct. 2015

[1] The Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom, vol. 5.

[2] Substituting faith for wisdom: The principle that faith is the true cause for gaining supreme wisdom, and faith alone leads to enlightenment. In general, Buddhism describes supreme wisdom as the cause of enlightenment. According to the Lotus Sutra, however, even Shariputra, who among the Buddha's ten major disciples was revered as foremost in wisdom, could attain enlightenment only through faith, not through wisdom. In other words, while the Buddha awakened to the truth through wisdom, we can attain the same state of enlightenment through having faith in and practicing the correct teaching of the Buddha.

[3] Fundamental darkness or ignorance: The most deeply rooted illusion inherent in life, said to give rise to all other illusions. The inability to see or recognize the truth, particularly, the true nature of one's life.
