It's a leader's courageous and undaunted spirit
that provides the driving force
It's a leader's courageous and undaunted spirit
that provides the driving force
for advancement and development.
Leaders,
take action vigorously
and have a life force that is full of vitality,
so that you can take command like a raging lion
for the sake of kosen-rufu!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"if the minds of living beings are impure, their land is also impure, but if their minds are pure, so is their land. There are not two lands, pure or impure in themselves. The difference lies solely in the good or evil of our minds."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The mentor-disciple relationship is the essence of Nichiren Buddhism. As such, it is also the ultimate key to faith for absolute victory.
"The mentor-disciple relationship is the essence of Nichiren Buddhism. As such, it is also the ultimate key to faith for absolute victory.
"The Daishonin writes: 'If teacher and disciple are of different minds, they will never accomplish anything' (WND-1, 909).
"Unless our hearts are united with our mentor, we cannot achieve anything, and kosen-rufu will not advance. When we share the same commitment as our mentor, we can overcome all hardships and realise absolute victory in everything. This is the heart of the Soka Gakkai spirit.
"In a letter titled 'How Those Initially Aspiring to the Way Can Attain Buddhahood through the Lotus Sutra,'[1] the Daishonin writes to a woman disciple: 'Three things are required—a good teacher, a good believer, and a good teaching—before prayers can be effective and disasters banished from the land' (WND-1, 880).

"Both the first and second Soka Gakkai presidents, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and Josei Toda, recognised the importance of this passage and underlined it in their personal copies of the Daishonin's writings. It aptly describes the shared struggle of mentor and disciple.
"The Daishonin likened these three requirements for having one's prayers answered and creating a realm of peace and tranquillity to the three ingredients necessary for making fire in his day: 'a good piece of steel, a good flint, and good tinder' (WND-1, 880).[2] Fire was created by striking together a piece of steel and flint, and allowing the spark this generated to ignite the tinder.
"The Daishonin further states that the Buddha defines a good teacher as someone who is 'free from any fault in secular affairs, who never fawns upon others even in the slightest, who desires and is satisfied with little, . . . who is compassionate, . . . reads and upholds the Lotus Sutra precisely as it teaches and also encourages and leads others to embrace it' (WND-1, 880).
"Furthermore, a good believer is one who upholds the Lotus Sutra, and a good teaching is the Lotus Sutra, 'the foremost among all doctrines' (WND-1, 880). Nichiren Daishonin spread the teaching of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo encompassing both practice for oneself and practice for others, exerting himself in exact accord with the Buddha's teachings to lead all people to enlightenment throughout the Latter Day of the Law. He is the Buddha of the Latter Day and the perfect exemplar of a good teacher. Mr. Makiguchi and Mr. Toda, who selflessly dedicated their lives to kosen-rufu just as the Daishonin instructed, are also our good teachers in the realm of kosen-rufu and in life.
"In the light of the Daishonin's writings, we are certain to triumph in all our struggles if we make the spirit of these mentors of kosen-rufu our own and employ the 'strategy of the Lotus Sutra' (WND-1, 1001)."

[1] Though the circumstances surrounding its composition are unclear, this letter presents the basics of faith in the Lotus Sutra to a woman who appears to have been a Nembutsu practitioner.
[2] The Daishonin writes: "Only when one understands all this clearly and believes in it can the Law manifest its power and the Buddhas and bodhisattvas bring benefit to the people. To illustrate, in kindling a fire, three things are needed: a good piece of steel, a good flint, and good tinder. The same is true of prayer. Three things are required—a good teacher, a good believer, and a good teaching—before prayers can be effective and disasters banished from the land" (WND-1, 880).
