"In another writing ["The True Aspect of All Phenomena"], the Daishonin declares: 'Nichiren alone took the lead in carrying out the task of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth' (WND-1, 385). The courage to 'take the lead' is the spirit of Nichiren Buddhism. We must be prepared to first stand up ourselves if we wish to truly become the Daishonin's successors.

"For that reason, we must stand up with firm resolve and take decisive action. Pioneers face many hardships, but those hardships provide all the more opportunity for undergoing great human revolution. When a single dedicated practitioner of the Lotus Sutra takes action for kosen-rufu, it will awaken others around them, inspiring first one and then another and another to follow suit. One person's earnest efforts will definitely create a new page of history."

"Mr. Toda also declared: 'Soka Gakkai members are emissaries of the Buddha. We have been sent here by the Buddha. We are representatives of the Daishonin. Though we appear to be ordinary people, we are actually supremely noble, and worthy of the highest respect.'[1]

"The Soka Gakkai has made possible countless precious dramas of human revitalisation. Our organisation could be called an unprecedented realm of humanistic education—one that fosters human growth and development. This is because each of us is striving to realise the lofty goal of kosen-rufu.

"When we devote our lives to the great vow for kosen-rufu, we can achieve a great human revolution. When we base ourselves on the Mystic Law and strive together with the Soka Gakkai and our fellow members, we can positively transform all hardships and adversity—changing poison into medicine—and realise brilliant victories without fail."

"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'I have upheld my faith without faltering, even though . . . the lord of Kamakura [the regent] twice exiled me, and I nearly had my head cut off. Because I have persevered without fear, there are now people who think my teachings may be true' (WND-1, 489).

"No matter what challenges we face, we must fearlessly stand up and speak out for what is right. Such consistent, committed efforts are certain to change people's hearts and minds.

"The starting points of our peace movement are the Daishonin's spirit of 'establishing the correct teaching for the peace of the land' and President Toda's antinuclear weapons declaration. With that guiding inspiration, we have continued to sincerely reach out to others in dialogue, never faltering in the face of any difficulty. That is why thinking people around the world are incredibly supportive of our movement and are watching with great interest the many successes we are achieving through our activities.

"As the 'pillar of peace for all the world's peoples,' 'the eyes of respect for the dignity of life,' and the 'great ship of brilliant achievement for the triumph of humanity,'[1] let's set our sights on the far distant future. And let us once again today forge heart-to-heart ties and help connect as many people as possible to Nichiren Buddhism."

"Inheriting his lofty spirit, our members everywhere, including those of outlying islands and other remote communities, have overcome many difficulties to gain the trust and support of those around them.

"The first shi of the word shishi, or 'lion' [which means 'teacher'], is the Wonderful Law that is passed on by the teacher. The second shi [which means 'child'] is the Wonderful Law as it is received by the disciples. The 'roar' is the sound of the teacher and the disciples chanting in unison. The verb sa, 'to make' or 'to roar,' should here be understood to mean to initiate or to put forth. It refers to the initiating of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo in the Latter Day of the Law."

"'In the case of the Lotus Sutra, however, all the sutras preached in the first forty and more years are included within this one sutra. The Buddhas of the worlds in the ten directions, who are all endowed with the three bodies [of the Buddha],[1] are one and all gathered there, for, as it is explained, all are emanations of the one Buddha, Shakyamuni. Therefore, this one Buddha is none other than all Buddhas, and all Buddhas are thus brought together within the two characters of myoho [the Mystic Law].

"'For this reason, the benefits to be gained by reciting the five characters of Myoho-renge-kyo are great indeed.

"The Mystic Law is the underlying force governing all things in the universe. The sound of our voices chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo reverberates throughout the worlds of the ten directions, the entire universe. There is no place it will fail to reach.

"When we chant daimoku for the happiness of ourselves and others, it delights and activates the Buddhas and protective functions of the universe. The power of daimoku is immeasurable and can awaken the Buddha nature inherent in all people.

"Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is also vital in transforming our negative karma, doing our human revolution, and advancing kosen-rufu. Now is the time to demonstrate the truly incredible power of the daimoku of Bodhisattvas of the Earth!"

"'All together is the spirit of Mahayana bodhisattvas, who practise for their own and others' happiness, driven by the wish to help all people attain enlightenment.

"Mr. Toda said: 'What is the most necessary thing in life and faith? It is conviction. We must prize and value above all the Daishonin's absolute conviction.'

"Let's forge ahead with the firm conviction that dedicating ourselves to kosen-rufu is the most noble and incomparably valuable way to live."

"As the Daishonin indicates when he writes, 'In the end, no one can escape death' (WND-1, 1003), everyone in Japan at that time was facing the possibility of imminent death, as epidemics ravaged the nation and another attack by the Mongol forces loomed on the horizon.

"In light of this situation, the Daishonin says that, since life is limited, 'you should be willing to offer your life for the Lotus Sutra' (WND-1, 1003). Needless to say, he is not encouraging people to treat their lives lightly or sacrifice themselves.

"When we are clear about how we will live our life and the purpose to which we will dedicate it, we can demonstrate our true worth as human beings. And no way of life is more worthwhile than one dedicated to the supreme purpose of working for the happiness of humanity.

"Compared to the vast expanse of the universe, our lives might seem small and insignificant—no more than drops of dew on a leaf or specks of dust. But just as drops of dew merge to form the ocean, by dedicating our lives to the great vow for kosen-rufu, we can become one with the Mystic Law, the fundamental law underlying all existence. In this way, each of our lives, which may seem but like a drop of dew or speck of dust, comes to shine with eternal brilliance. Mr. Toda often said we become great 'ordinary people enlightened since time without beginning.' Developing an eternal life state as vast and boundless as the universe is the essence of Nichiren Buddhism."
