-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The Daishonin states,
"This is my vow, and I will never forsake it!"*
A "vow" only becomes a real one
when it is indeed fulfilled.
Let's experience the glory of victory
based on our resolute daimoku and
vibrant actions!

*"I will be the pillar of Japan. I will be the eyes of Japan. I will be the great ship of Japan. This is my vow, and I will never forsake it!"

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"This passage refers to the great joy that one experiences when one understands for the first time that one's mind from the very beginning has been a Buddha. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the greatest of all joys."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'I will be the pillar of Japan. I will be the eyes of Japan. I will be the great ship of Japan. This is my vow, and I will never forsake it!' (WND-1, 280–81; "The Opening of the Eyes")

"This is a famous passage from "The Opening of the Eyes,"[1] in which Nichiren Daishonin declares his great vow. The words "pillar," "eyes," and "great ship" are profound expressions arising from his immensely compassionate wish to enable all people to attain enlightenment. And I find it especially moving that he made this confident declaration while in exile on Sado Island.

"None of the fierce onslaughts of obstacles that had assailed the Daishonin since first proclaiming his teaching (in 1253) could extinguish the flame of the vow burning in his heart. In fact, as this stirring declaration indicates, the greater the difficulties he faced, the more passionately determined he was to do everything in his power to free people from suffering.

"Although the Daishonin specifically mentions Japan in this passage, his vow is not limited to a single nation. He sought to open the way to worldwide kosen-rufu by first saving the country where people's lives were most clouded by slander of the Law, where the darkness of the Latter Day of the Law was deepest. His assertion to never forsake his vow is also a resounding declaration that he has triumphed over all devilish functions in the midst of life-threatening persecutions.

"The expression "pillar of Japan," therefore, can be read to mean the "pillar of enlightenment for all in the Latter Day of the Law." It also brims with the vow and commitment to steadfastly uphold the correct teaching of Buddhism as the pillar of the community and society, the pillar of the world and humankind, as well as the pillar of the people and the Bodhisattvas of the Earth."

SGI Newsletter No. 9724, The Buddhism of the Sun—Illuminating the World [23] A Religion of Human Revolution—Part 3, Nichiren Daishonin's Great Vow to Lead All People to Enlightenment, from the March 2017 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translation released 18th Oct. 2017

[1] "The Opening of the Eyes": Completed at Tsukahara on Sado Island in February 1272 and addressed to all the Daishonin's disciples. It reveals that the Daishonin possesses three virtues of sovereign, teacher, and parent in the Latter Day of the Law.
