All the best! A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more. Tuesday, March 31st, 2015 -- TO MY FRIENDS -- To our noble fellow members of the Chugoku region,* the land of remarkably capable and talented people, now is the time to create countless surging waves proclaiming justice and conviction! Let's together witness the dawn of a new era! *The Chugoku Region of Japan includes Hiroshima, Okayama, Yamaguchi, Tottori and Shimane prefectures. Tuesday, March 31st, 2015 --- DAILY GOSHO --- (The Nirvana Sutra states: "Have no fear of mad elephants. What you should fear are evil friends! Why?) Because a mad elephant can only destroy your body; it cannot destroy your mind. (But an evil friend can destroy both body and mind. . . . Even if you are killed by a mad elephant, you will not fall into the three evil paths. But if you are killed by an evil friend, you are certain to fall into them") (On the Protection of the Nation, The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin Vol 2, page 135) Selection source: SGI President Ikeda's Essay, Seikyo Shimbun, March 11th, 2015 Wednesday, April 1st, 2015 ---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ---- "Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'Great evil portends the arrival of great good. If all of Jambudvipa [the entire world] were to be thrown into chaos, there could be no doubt that [the Lotus Sutra would] "be widely propagated throughout Jambudvipa" [LSOC28, 363]' (WND-1, 1122). "…Nichiren Buddhism sets forth the fundamental principles and means for resolving the problems of our contemporary world. "The Lotus Sutra teaches that all human beings are infinitely precious, possessing within them the noble Buddha nature, and presents a compassionate, altruistic way of life. Only when this philosophy is firmly established in people's hearts will it be possible to transform the all-too-common tendency of modern society to devalue life, and thereby put a stop to the tragedy of war. "In addition, the Buddhist principle of the oneness of life and its environment is a teaching that spurs us to reconsider the course of civilisation leading to widespread environmental destruction and shows us a new path to true prosperity for humanity. Similarly, the Buddhist principle of the oneness of body and mind offers a new way forwards for modern medicine, which often fails to focus on the whole person. "Furthermore, the Buddhist concept of dependent origination—which teaches that we do not exist in isolation, but rather are joined together in a profound web of relationships with everything else around us, supporting and aiding one another—can positively contribute to bringing together people long separated and divided by differences. "Nichiren Buddhism illuminates the true nature of life and death, reveals the way to transform our lives, and teaches the path of genuine humanity. It represents the most brilliant wisdom and supreme treasure of humankind. "Kosen-rufu is the effort to make the life-affirming principles of Nichiren Buddhism the common heritage of humanity and realise peace and prosperity for all."
