"The devil king of the sixth heaven is called a 'robber of life,' because he deprives people's lives of wisdom. He is also known as Freely Enjoying Things Conjured by Others, expressing the negative tendency inherent in life to take pleasure in controlling and manipulating others.
"These workings of the devil king diminish and close off people's lives, hindering the blossoming of their potential. The life tendency embodied in Freely Enjoying Things Conjured by Others, the desire to exploit and control others, is what lies behind every form of harmful behaviour in the world, from bullying to war, as well as the development of nuclear weapons and the rise of dictatorships.
"In contrast, the practice of the votary of the Lotus Sutra is to teach that all people are supremely noble beings who possess the Buddha nature and to help each individual reveal their limitless potential.
"In other words, the devil king embodies negative functions that cause unhappiness while the votary embodies positive functions that bring happiness. When both sides clash, a fierce battle between the forces of the devil king and the forces of the Buddha ensues. The teachings of Buddhism ultimately provide a way to overcome these devilish functions."
